In my estimation, it was Mark Taylor with Stephen Fleming as a close second. Mark Taylor was the first captain for me who brought the tactical side of captaincy to my knowledge. He moulded a Young team to series win in west indies which ended two decades of domination.

I would say Stephen Fleming because the way he would lead a mediocre team to punch above their weight every single time was the hallmark of a great captain.

I would also say Hansie Cronje And please no match fixing jibes at him here...he was Mccullum before Mccullum a very exciting captain...if you remember in the 90s before his fall from grace he used to be an example of what a captain should be like.

dhoni .. won everything with almost non-existent pace bowling and goal keeping and managed to take the team to #1 test ranking with senior citizens

Missing a word there :giggle:

Stephen Fleming for me. Having said that when Fleming was the captain, though kiwis did well it was more in ODIs and contrary to popular opinion new Zealand were never a bad odi side and did have some special players like cairns , astle, bond, vettori and Fleming himself. It's not as if theirs was a poor team and their success too was mostly in conditions suited to them like going till semis in 1999, winning that trophy in Kenya etc.
