Sourav Ganguly calls ICC intervention for 'unfair' Johannesburg pitch

If a pitch is not flat that doesn’t make it a minefield....This was a tough pitch because it was a steaming track just like a dry surface in Subcontinent is not a minefield.

Pujara’s approach in the 2nd half of his innings was actually perfect...punish half volleys and ignore the semi decent ones also...that’s why he got a pretty much chance less 50.

No one can be trained to counter seam movement. It's just all instinct because no batsman will know which way the ball will seam that too bowlers bowling at 140kph. You can train to play pace, not seam because there is no time to react or adjust once the ball pitches anywhere in good length area. Most batsmen play the original line. Pujara does the same and hopes that ball moves enough to not take the edge.

But the amount of seam movement was outrageous yesterday. Last time too, this pitch had grass but that did not have unplayable movement. You need to check Cricinfo commentary and see how many times unplayable word or comment how to play that is used.

Even that dharmshala ODI pitch was a minefield. Such pitches get better once the moisture dries out.

As I said an equivalent of this pitch is a dry surface where there is turn for the ball very early also known as dustbowls...If dustbowls are called minefields and rated as substandard than throughout history most SC pitches would have been rated that. This is the polar opposite of such pitches. A minefield is where the pitch crumbles and disintegrates very early.

 

If ICC has a standard for how much grass should be left on a pitch and this pitch violates that then it is definitely substandard...if ICC doesn’t have such rules than sure that can be raised too but now as the rules stand this cannot be considered a minefield. Spicy and challenging pitch, absolutely.

 

These are the only type of pitches where a captain puts the opposition into bat and absolutely astonishing why Kohli chose to  bat...almost like a Ponting type pre determined decision making.

Agree it was definitely a lottery pitch and not fit for a LOI...test cricket is over 5 days and sure such pitches are the norm especially in England and Newzealand...unless there is a point to be made here by Saurav  I don’t think this is what you normally call a minefield in tests.

 

Sure he could have said look at this pitch when some one brings in the dry surfaces and dustbowls but don’t think there is anything worth investigating here.

That is just sad....I have immense respect for Dada the cricketer and captain but I have said it a couple of times there is a lot he can do for Bengal cricket ... the drainage system in one of the most iconic grounds in the world is a disgrace....I even gave him the benefit of doubt for the WT20 debacle because there was

poltics involved but so far it has been a let down .cricket administration is not all about the players your team produces or how you do in first class etc there is so much more.

 

Anyway I don’t want to make this about taking cheap shots at Ganguly(which looks like I

already did  ) sometimes the show of patriotism overshadows actual tangible reasoning case in point some of the responses on this thread.

When India dished out rank turners to SAF in 2015, the ICC immediately started calling their shots and started labeling most pitches as Poor.

 

Now, when SAF serves green mambas to us, the ICC is keeping quiet.  Therefore, Ganguly had to make the comment. 

 

Had ICC termed the SAF pitches in this series as Poor, Ganguly defintely would not have bothered to speak out.

This, glad that someone is unmasking the hypocrisy of ICC here. That moron Kohli called Cape Town pitch excellent, talk about scoring a self goal. Fight fire with fire, if our curators are humiliated for preparing a certain kind of pitch and gora curators get thumbs up for similar pitches, time to wake up and smell the coffee. If you don't stand up for your people, don't expect others to do it for you.

Verdict? If this isn't rated as 'poor' pitch what should we do? I mean some of our venues like Mohali, Nagpur and Pune are 1 more 'poor' rating away from being banned from hosting matches for a significant amount of time.
