Kohli has raised his profile as batsman in this series

Agreed. This series performance is hard to beat. Pure Class. One more great series in England and he will match Smith as 2nd best ever besides Bradman.

Lara played 9 tests in SA and scored 2 centuries at an avg of 46

Kohli played 5 tests there and already have 2 centuries with an avg of 56

Kohli should sometime score runs in mars with 1 leg tied and blindfolds on. Only then he can be considered as a class batsman perhaps.

This, its hard to convince some people.

People forget how inhumanly consistent Tendy was, until 2005 or so.  Practically every single series, home or away, he invariably delivered a hundred.    Recency bias means they remember the last 5-8 years of his career, where he was a shadow of the ATG he was, for more than 50% of his test career.

i remember the mere sight of Tendulkar getting out, apart from the obvious disappointment, was met with a pin drop silence around thew country...the stadium, livings rooms, ships, train stations...people stopped to reassess...a brief reminder the man was human.

If Tendy's career had ended around 2004 or so, he would have universally been considered as the greatest since Bradman.  And that would have been a 17 year career.   But because he was still international calibre for an additional decade, perversely it takes away from his greatness.   Only for the ignorant though.

If he does well in England he would surpass Sachin. Sachin record in SA got boosted after his last series there in 2011 where he scored a meaningless 100 after the match already was lost.

No hundred is meaningless in South Africa against their attacks.

I wish we learn the art of debating where we do not have to come to a point to start calling knocks as meaningless etc of the players we are debating about.

Takes guts to score a ton in South Africa, against Steyn and co.

On topic,  Yes, Kohli will take over Sachin and everyone eventually. He is going to retire as the best Indian test batsman away from home in all those conditions.

I am not trying to demean Sachin's achievements but it was meaningless 100. Match was lost and pitch became flat .All runs are not same, some runs are more valuable.Dhoni also scored 90 in that innings.

Kohli's 41 might be one of the most important knocks of his career.Wickets taken a bowler or runs scored by batsman after match has been decided have very little value.

Bar isn't that low yet. Kohli had just 2 good consecutive years. He will have to do lot more than this to surpass SRT.

Lot of similarities, and lot of differences.

SRT never had big series like Kohli had with SL, Aus and England. Although one could say that his performances against 1998, Eng 1999 and 1996 were similar.

Kohli's Adelaide performance had disappointment of SRT's 1999 Chennai inning.

That inning of 153 against SA had brilliance of 169 by SRT.

SRT's 155 and 177 against Aus at SR of 80+ had dominance of Kohli's double centuries against Lanka.

SRT's career highlight started with that 100 at Perth, Kohli's with that century at Adelaide.

Posted

After a hundred against English at Old Trafford in fourth inning to save the game SRT had two double hundreds in 1992 away series against Australia. For some, At Old Trafford itself, Sachin declared his presence, If anyone had any doubt, Perth and SCG hundreds in 1992 trip settled that. Specially Perth one.

Top that with bottlecaps and doosara.

That many batsmen (except from a certain country :phehe:) had to face. But it seems umpires had a special grudge against Lara-Tendulkar, that's why I never warmed up to Ponting who was a beneficiary of many reprieves.

153 vs 169 is no contest, that 169 was scored on pitch flat as pancake where opposition scored 529.

Show me one match where Sachin outdid his team and opposition, he might have but I don't recollect.

When did opposition face 4 Indian bowlers averaging below 30? Current SA team could have scored 500 against Dodda Ganesh and Prasad on the same pitch.

Ishant is avg under 30? Anyone can avg under 30 in first two tests.

Don't give out excuses.

This isn't best bowling Indian team has ever assembled. OK. He can outscore his team, but how can he outscore opposition batsmen when they were facing pop gun attack.

India was weak even at home when Sachin was playing OK.

As Holding said, when Sachin played he had he had one other very great batsman in Dravid and two exceptionally good batsmen in Laxman and Sehwag.

Sachin played with one of the strongest batting line up for majority of his career and yet his supporter make it sound like Sachin had no one.

Every bowlers used to have a bottle of sunscreen on his face. Some used scruffed trousers and towels too. Padosis just went extra mile

Holding is lot smarter and experienced than you think.  He knows that Kohli will not be ever considered to be as good as top 10 bats of all time by significantly high percentage of Cricket Pundits(including ex players).

So what he was doing by putting Sachins name in mix is termed as "Trolling"
