Iyer...technically ...worst indian batsmen to debut for India from last 10 years

He has been our best middle order batsman since being given opportunities after the WC but knives are out for him (again) after one failure!

Technique or no technique, he has earned himself a run through his performances after the WC.

We are a country obsessed with talent, flamboyance and technique. Iyer has already smashed a 35 ball 44 Vs quality pace attack of Starc, Hazelwood and Cummins guiding his team to a 289 chase not long ago. But people are here discussing him struggling to hit Unadkat. :phehe:

Hold on your horses guys, dropping him will not help the cause. He is a perfect ODI batsman to have, may not be in T20s but certainly in ODIs.

Have anyone seen steve Smith's technique?? He looks worse than iyer end of the technique is nothing in limited over game but temparment that's what matters, give the guy some time he will surely improve if he doesn't then change him. There was a time when people were jumping around to get kohli out of the team he was inconsistent as anyone but look at him now. A champion isn't produced overnight it's long process to maximize someone's ability yeah I would've liked kl Rahul to succeed but team didn't show any kind of confidence in him after that sri lanka series for the number four role if Indian cricket was played by the way of icf's keyboard worriers then we would have stopped to pakistan level by now for sure.

wrong comparison, Steve smith one weakness of bowling in throat was exposed by the time he became a legend that 2 just by 2 bowlers one archer who damn quick and another wagner who is damn accurate with that length. At the end its about getting in good position and smith does it, so his technique works for him and it unconvential rather then problamtic

Iyer on other hand has been caught soon and with one more weakness of quick wrist spin that will also be caught in coming days . This short ball problem can hamper early in career specially when the batsman has a habbit fo taking his eyes off the ball which he did today with his bat hanging in air.

Iyer deserves a run but if he doesnt work this out it can get very tough likes was in case of raina , ahmed shehzad, duminy. Problem is ppl will also forget this when he faces lesser sides , but it will return to haunt him like was case of rayudu. This hard length issue has not only be expolited by top bowler but also unadkat and Holder (who isnt great in ODI)

the 3rd ODI knock ur talkin where those guys were bowling filth, dont forget previous 2 ODI that exploited similar problem and he looked at sea

If u struggle against unadkat hard length boss its serious trouble.

He is far from perfect, let him do survive and be successful for a longer duration.

Counting him out or hyping him after 18-19 games both are wrong , he cud come out as a better batsman or decline further but this is a serious issue

I think he has a lot of time to improve upon his weakness, smith debut was in 2009 if I'm not wrong he was a leg spinner who can bat a bit now because of his temparment he has become what he is today ,In kohli's first test tour he was bounced out many a times by Edwards he then worked on it and improved upon it steve wough wasn't the best pullar of cricket ball but he had his own ways of scoring ,if you see iyer's case his main problem is his bat lift doesn't sink with his foot movement ,he is more of backfoot player but when he tried to pull his weight was coming forward I'm not talking about today's dismissal it was a match against nz if I'm not wrong

ur comparing him 2 two of the ATGs , which he isnt clearly ....most cases end up like raina, duminy, shehzad

Lets see how he goes but clearly he is no smith n kohli

Im not sure what exactly it is , but one thing he takes his eyes off and does know wether to go back or forth on such length also like rohit, rahul, gill he isnt blessed with that extra or like kohli he doesnt have that quick hands or unlike dhoni, yuvi , pandya he isnt naturally good at pulling or hooking

In NZ they bowled wrong lengths to him and pitches in that series was spongy . These signs have been noticed before but now it ll be exploited

T20s - 35/130

T20Is - 28/129

Death - 177

Leg-spin - 29/131

140+ - 35/129

Hard length - 28/114

Quick wrist spin - 35/116

Slow ball - 71/139

I'm not comparing instead I'm stateing that even ATG's also had their problems against some sort of bowlings but they improved upon that as they played ,for me iyer as batsman has confidence and temparment to overcome his weakness against the short ball, and yuvraj wasn't the best puller either he was rather instinctive against the short balls but his other strength was so much advance that his weakness never bothered him limited overs cricket.

Suresh Raina had issues with short pitch stuff as well and was not as good as Iyer in terms of attacking the spinners. I think Iyer's main strength is that he can build and anchor the inning very well and can smash spinners for fun which is what you need at 4 or 5 in ODI format.

Raina at his peak was damn good agaisnt spinner infact iyer isnt that good against spinners who bowl quicker then 90k but raina had no such issues against spinner

Raina was a much bigger clown against short-pitched stuff, remember the 2006 RSA tour, where we were annihilated in ODIs 0-4. Even Nel and Hall made him jump outside the pitch. He eventually found a way around the flaw, moreover ODI pitches these days have no demons. 2023 WC in India, Iyer's lack of technique against that kind of bowling won't be tested, statistically he is doing better than Eoin Morgan (surely the world's best #4 post-2015) since he became permanent. Talks about discarding him are premature. Maybe Amre can work closely with him to at least make this problem of his more manageable.

The sample is too low for determining his ability against quick spinners and moreover that sample is in itself coming from T20 format where you take that extra risk when batting. My only concern is if we discard him too early, we will end up nowhere in search of better M.O batsman. You don't want a similar scenario to 2019 WC happen again. Gotta back him, he has 9 scores of 50+ in 17 innings and is only 25 years old. His peak days are yet to come.

All post are archived i post a clip from pre show where laxman showed this taking 10 of his dismissals , even against SRH match when ever he came in they threw the ball to iyer...iyer lost his bat shape

https://www.iplt20.com/video/210247/rashid-khan-s-match-winning-3-14

watch this clip, its not about getting out but look at the way he lost his bat shape .

who is saying discard him ???? If u show someone weakness doesnt mean to discard him , i can show everyones but the point is this needs to be checked carefully or we can have repeat rayudu case. Im someone who beileves in long run but also it needs to be seen if the problem is being worked upon

Answer is in ur post, these problem generally get exposed in SA or Aus or May be NZ ...rayudu got exposed twice but only when he went to Aus .

  • Raina post 2006 was dropped
  • After his comeback he didnt go to Sa till 2010 , where he failed again
  • Aus he didnt go til 2012 where he failed, but numbers got better in Wc with innings against pak , zimb
  • NZ in that phase didnt have great fast bowling
  • England bowling was pretty rubbish those days

Plus raina problem was techincal which became mental with time, but early on he cud handle bounce below 140 ...problem was when it went above 140k....but in last 2 yrs domestic even 125k bouncer has been a problem

Iyer looks a tough guy, a man for crisis in 50 over format..especially important to have a player like him when Kohli is going through a bad phase. Rahul is up and down, still dont trust him down there.

I hope we back him, he will come good. Already his game is better than 2 years back when he first came in into the team.

Mostly agree.  But don't forget Rahul was oft-injured too, so the entire blame for his absences don't fall on selectors/TM.

It was quite evident that Iyer was never comfortable against good pacers.

We saw that in South africa 2018(when some Einstein on this forum were cursing kohli bcoz he dropped iyer).

Now we know that kohli was right and the great technical analysts on ICF were wrong.

Giving lot of chances to young players is good but we need to realise that chances should be given to players who are talented and not those who perform well against minnows and hog the spot for a lifetime.

kohli was right ?? What :hysterical:

He bought back rayudu , declining yuvraj and raina all much worse then iyer . Iyer was much much better then  those guys at that time

Dont call his lack of patience as a smart call.....iyer was out coz kohli doesnt have patience not that he identified his technical issue

Yeah you know everything.

Why do you think he dropped him in South Africa?

He took a right call at that time coz it was evident that iyer has problems against bounce and pace.

The fact is he took the right call in dropping Iyer, i am in no way supporting Rayudus selection and it was not a good move on Kohlis part. Totally agree with you on that.
