Does India need Pandya for England test series?

Is he a good enough batsman? Does India really need an extra bowling option in their condition, but with hit and miss batting?

For countries like Australia, you can argue that it's no-brainer. Flat hard decks and you don't want to break your fast bowlers. They need to bowl fast and hit the deck hard so having an extra pacer helps them do so in short burst.

What about England? Pitches can be flat there too, but if it helps bowlers, it will be swining condition. Moreover we have seen runs by batsmen from 4-6 can be crucial once ball loses shine and sun comes out. But are we going to stuck into situation where players see off new ball, and there is no one to captialize? 220-3 after tea, a wicket falls and we are looking at Pandya and Saha to come next. This can easily turn to 300 A.O scenario.

WHat should India do?

1. Give a game to Pandya and see how it goes. Shami, Bhuvi, Ishant, Ashwin, Pandya

2. If Kuldeep plays then we will have to drop Pandya for a batsman?

At least in a couple of tests, conditions permitting I am inclined to play 2 world class spinners.....we have never tried that overseas. But Pandya should always be in the reckoning.

Yes , we need extra bowling option just to give rest to our bowlers. His bowling has improved a lot to .....and opposition tend to take him lightly which will often lead to a wkt

Pitches wud be flat during this time due to the time the test series is played

but if they offer helpful pitches, i have seen saying this for long take vijay shankar as well

Take pandya n shankar both and be flexible

Flat pitches- pandya

Seamer friendly- shankar

if shankar is not taken back pandya

that makes batting week

and we already have

vijay - not consistent

pujara- having question marks overseas

Rahane- never been consistent

rahul- lacks captain backing

virat- poor record in england

saha- his batting puts question mark on his place

A lil bit of cushion is what pandya gives to both batting n bowling

Now now Gollum, what you would be inclined to play and what you got in English conditions are two different things

But if pitches are similar to late 2013? During the CT there was enough to keep Ash-Jaddu interested. IIRC even the Ashes that year kept Swann very much in the thick of action. Depends on what conditions we get, besides the English boys by and large are vulnerable against spin.

England are vulnerable to all bowling

If playing 2 spinners it would depend on how many left handers England play , English batsman terrible on spin away from them

Yup based on the last few tests they may even play 7-8 lefties and Ashwin/Kuldeep can take the ball away from them.

If Karthik is playing as a keeper, our batting get stronger than it is with Saha. So there is an urge to drop Pandya and play a seamer instead. But if Saha is our keeper, then Pandya is must.

No, we can do away with 10 batsman but giving up a world class glovesman for an inferior product is a huge risk.

I think, Pandya should be tried for first two test. But as we get into the later part of the summer, the pitches will start aiding the spinners. It will in our benefit to replace Pandya/Ishant (whoever perform worse) by kuldeep then.

Playing pandya in test cricket is like playing jadeja in odi cricket, it seems like he is useful but actually not. The gains a specialist player would bring in pandya's place means that the Indian team will have to bear a massive opportunity loss with every game until pandya masters swing and bats with more responsibility.

In the first few tests played by him, a batting avg of 33 and bowling avg of 36 is just fine. 3 of these tests were against the very strong ranked second SA side.

Ofc he has to go a long way to be a world class test match all rounder, but it isn't a bad start and deserves some chances.

if the pitch is green....absolutely not.

if pitch is flat , then yes.

on green pitch , his batting is doubtful, also his bowling wouldn't be of use on green pitches ,as other specialized seamers will do the job.

Shouldn't he be in contention if the pitch is green?

He is bit pieces player, he won't get you wickets or get your runs to make any kind of impact. I dont know how this guy got in Indian Test side.

His fielding alone has already turned a test match. He is a must to begin with.
