Ifs and buts really but I think kohli got umesh back very late ,he should have been brought on earlier because only he made Curran look like a proper tailender

True, he should have been definitely tried earlier. In tests it's quite common to have a bad 1st innings and then a good 2nd innings and vice versa, made no sense to keep him out for that long.

They were 184/8 but India added 87 runs after that so we created chance when we were almost lost but Curran took away when they were 87/7

no point in discussing  'what if'. We can also  tell what if Kohli's catch was not dropped. Similarly what if Root didn't get run out due to that miraculous effort from Kohli?? I would say that was pure luck because had the fielder been Rhodes or Ponting , it could have been easily termed as 'brilliant' effort. But with Kohli ,  too much luck involved there.Similarly Curran played a brilliant knock just like so many of those  Jadeja or Ashwin played  in our conditions. Then the solution??????? First it is a fact that chasing in 4rth inns has a bit more psychological pressure associated with it. That being the case, for any team  to win , it needs a brilliant top order to play with such confidence so much so that  the score got to say 100/2 .But with hacks like Dhawan, aging Vijay, unproven Rahul, constantly shuffled proven abroad player Rahane  serving the top order, I am afraid chances are more that the team looses than wins in such scenarios.
