At this point it is moot to discuss about him. Thala, Biriyani, Jadhav confirmed in the middle order.

There is a competition between him,Pant and Dk though. 12 spots are sealed. One spot will be a fast bowler. 2 out of the 3 will make it.

Knowing how TN players are known to go off the boil after initial promise i am going to keep the expectations low. They just don't have the drive , determination to succeed.  At this point i would compare his batting with Ashwin who also bats somewhat like a specialist batsman. He has to go to the next level. Only way he can do is significantly increasing his bowling skills.

Who are best top rated TN player according to you ? Ashwin and Srikanth ? I don’t remember anyone else.

Complete lack of foot movement, all hands with cemented feet. Not sure if he gets a spot as a specialist batsman (is a below average fielder). Has to bowl 4-5 overs regularly to play ahead of a specialist batsman

Among those who debuted in the last 2-3 years, below is how I would rate them in terms of "potential"

  • T1: Shaw (played in Ind though), Agarwal (looked like he belongs to this level in Aus), Pant (has pacing issues) and Hardik (amazing hitting potential. Could become 2nd most important wkt for Ind in LOIs)
  • T2: Shankar, Gill (Good but some ingredient is still missing atm)
  • T3: Krunal (weakness vs short ball but then even Dhawan has that), Vihari (a glorified nightwatchman)

Pandey is good too in ODIs but he appears to play for his average at times

You are bit harsh on this young kid...

He was made to open which is not his usual position. He made his debut outside subcontinent which is usually little difficult.

Did you see his cut shot...reminds me of Gundappa Vishhu...

He can be a very good player ..........he is a work-in progress

Yes, he has issues with short ball but most of the subcontinent players usually has that weakness. Moreover, he is not that bad against short ball as this forum has made it looked.

he is a very impressive batsman and the way he wasnt even tried for a single over when others were going for plenty, it suggests TM is looking at him only as a backup batsman.

Did you watch him let go three boundaries? Watch the highlights again. He moves around quite a lot but doesn't look to be a very safe fielder.

17.2  HH Pandya to de Grandhomme, 3 runs, banged short outside off, goes for the pull, it's in the air but in the gap as well, Vijay Shankar is charging in from the deep midwicket, dives to his left but cannot reach there

4
12.3 HH Pandya to Munro,
FOUR runs, another fumble, this time by Vijay near deep midwicket, it was a low full toss on the stumps and Munro helped it towards deep midwicket, along the ground

4
4.3 HH Pandya to Munro,
FOUR runs, magnificent! Picks the length early and whips this up and over the infield as it bounces past Vijay Shankar at deep midwicket. Vijay covered good ground again but the ball spun away and he ended up crashing into the advertising hoardings. Seems fine though

As I said unless he bowls regularly (and bowl 125+), he should not be playing as a specialist batsman.

A decent fielder would have stopped each of those. Watch again, every time he over ran which shows poor judgment. Catch was dropped because again he did not judge the pace and had a late start.

Watch him in IPL as well. I remember watching him misfield many times, again same issue, lack of judgment.
