This style won't work in tests because the format forces you to play the ball to it's merit instead of whacking every ball. Viv could do it, but then there is only one Viv Richards. But then again, It is the same batch of qualities which make him highly successful limited overs opener while cause his downfall in the test match arena. MechEng 1 Link to comment
someone
Cricket isnt that simple, and 1 +1= 2 isnt always the case. Sometimes it's just sheer luck and extra-confidence as opener, that may help Sharma. When we had a weak technical yet superb opener like Sehwag, certainly Sharma deserves a chance.... Project Rohit going on as Chief Selector has said that he is being considered as an opener in tests ( for the upcoming series ), despite him not being a test opener. Add to that multiple big names lending their support to Rohit too. A lot of important people connected to the Indian Cricket Fraternity want him in the test team despite his unimpressive test record for a long time. A lot of fans want to see him play tests too. It will be unfortunate not to see him succeed in test cricket! Prabhdeep Singh 1 Link to comment
Prabhdeep Singh
Can you imagine if he succeeds as opener. The entertainment factor would be huge. Indian batsmanship in Tests has not been pleasing on the eye for a long time. The playing of spin bowling has been lacking. Having Rohit Sharma in Test Batting line up will be a welcome change. The last great batting line up collectively in Tests was quite a while ago: Gambhir, Sehwag, Dravid, Tendulkar, Laxman, Ganguly, Dhoni Edited September 11, 2019 by Prabhdeep Singh Link to comment

kubrickian
It has always been a dumb tradition in Indian cricket to put someone in test team just because they have done well in limited overs cricket despite the fact they are completely different ball games. Yuvraj, Raina etc selections are prime examples of that and it happened under Ganguly's watch as well. Not surprised Ganguly is advocating Rohit's inclusion as a test opener despite the fact he has never opened in longer version even in Ranji trophy. Yuvi and Raina were also given a long rope in national side despite having glaring technical deficiencies. As a result, other capable players were not given the opportunity to prove themselves and we never found a decent No. 6. I see that they haven't learned anything from the past and this dumb tradition continues. Link to comment

Ideally Rohit should be gven the captaincy of both the limited overs formats and all the new kids should be given chances into the test teams. It's time the management takes a long hard look at muti-format players and start reducing their numbers. Except for Bumrah, Kohli and to an extent Shami I ideally don't see a point where players play all three formats. This is a malady plaguing the team for a long time. The thinking among elite indian cricket circles, as mentioned several times by Ganguly, seems to be that if you are a good cricketer you can and should play all formats. Test players not playing ODIs leaves them without 'match fitness' apparently. Unless we go beyond this line of thought, expect more of these confused selectoral games. Also, we find it soo hard to move beyond players , despite obvious weaknesses in certain conditions. Kumble recently was talking about Ashwin bring 'no. 1 spinner' and how we just had to find way to play both him and jadeja in overseas tests...So Kuldeep who got a fiver in last test he played in Sydney and who shastri had said will be no. 1 overseas spinner is not even in picture for kumble? https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.indiatoday.in/amp/sports/cricket/story/kuldeep-yadav-will-be-our-number-one-spinner-in-overseas-tests-now-ravi-shastri-1448507-2019-02-05 Link to comment
vishalvirsingh
No If I was a selector I wouldn't have picked rohit as test opener. Normally in tests pitches give some scope and advantage to fast bowlers. When these conditions are very favourable bowlers exploit to the fullest now. Even fielding standards have improved that's why shikhar has failed as test opener . I would give kl rahul more chances along with mayank. Both have great capabilities to succeed in tests. My money is on mayank to succeed more in tests and kl more in ODI. Mayank is solid in defence. Link to comment
