  1. 1. Is Kohli the best Indian test captain?

    • Yes he is the best India ever got
    • No he just inherited a good team
    • He may be one of the best but there were others who did not have sufficient resources at their disposal to be more successful

He has to win in south africa, then last test in england and then when happening a test series in nz to be considered the greatest.. dhoni won in nz, dhoni drew and was on course to win in saf 2010, ganguly drew in eng, aus, won in pak..dravid won in eng.. kohli has just won 2 times in aus, he lost against eng in 2018, also saf and also nz..

Dhoni beat a weak as pluck kiwi side

A pre prime weaker version of England with some luck back in 07. Strauss's England was much stronger.

Dhoni came closer to beating Kiwis away again in 2014..

Win in 2009 was special.  That Napier draw is right up there with SCG 2021 escape.

Almost 50 years we waited for that series win.

It was a weak team in 2009 though. Styris and crap were bowling.

Dhoni plays swing better than kuli hahahaha.

2014 was indeed a strong kiwi side. Dint we lose 1 0? Baz scored 300. Ridiculous.

No. That is Saurav Ganguly, we were considered as minnows, weak and fixers before he took the reign.

Kohli is good in tests but he had the luxury of being accessible to all the resources because we were powerhouses by that time.

don't forget that we had a very weak bowling lineup under Dada and moreover he had to deal with all the crap from the match-fixing fallout.

Ganguly still had Sachin,Dravid,Kumble in team.Even VVS and Bhajji debuted before he took over

We were by no means powerhouse in Tests when Kohli took over.We were no. 7 in rankings IIRC and used to win at home only

That is because between 2011-14, we were in transition state. By 2014-15, Kohli, Pujara, Ashwin and Jadeja were well settled in team. The resources that were allocated to Kohli did helped him because we were able to improve our domestic structure and invest in improvement of pace attack. Kohli deserves credit for backing them. However, obviously, Kohli is not gonna be teaching them how to bowl so that they become better pacers, it was due to the investments been put on improving our pace attack.

Ganguly, on other hand, instilled the confidence and brought a new flair of aggressive game in Indian cricket  which was lacking before. The Indian team of 1999-00 required a fresh captain after all the fixing saga that went through and Tendulkar was anyways done with the captaincy too. Ganguly really shaped the Indian cricket in all formats under his leadership. Yes, they didn't won finals too but that was more down to being up against the greatest ODI team of all-time than choking.

Yes, no Indian team could beat that Oz side in the finals unless basically everything went India's way!

Bump.

Kohli achieves a rare milestone of 40 test victories as a captain. Only three captains have achieved it in the past.Waugh, Ponting n Smith.

What a tremendous captaincy record is he building.

Statistically yes he has great numbers... But could somebody have done a better job? Probably and as Boycott said even my mum can captain this lot and win most of the games

When did Boycott say that? Lol

Kohli is just at the right place at the right time. Anybody can captain this team and win as Rahame showed on Australia with much inferior resources. If anything we would have won more tests if not for his selection blunders.

If Ponting is a great captain then Kohli is too.

I would say he is the luckiest captain, as the pace attack which we have right now is one of the best in the world and any captain who does have one of the best pace or allround attack(include Ashwin/Jaddu) in subcontinent will be winning everywhere.

Kohli is like Clive Lloyd who turned WI around with putting emphasis on playing with 4 best  bowlers who happened to be great fast bowlers.Captaincy is not always X's and O's, it is about installing a belief. He has stuck to his belief of playing with 5 bowlers even thru losses.

in 2014 -15 we lost to aussies 2 0 in a competitive series away from home. midway through the series when we were losing 2 0, kohli took over. technically under kohli we dint lose that series.
