prudent_kreeda Posted January 14, 2020 Posted January 14, 2020 No one should lose sleep if pant is dropped for the time being . He is there most probably till NZ tour .If he is total failure , let him be dropped . Let him go back and put in work. Try next alternative . What should happen is , by the looks of it Pant & Samson are identified as future Short Format WK. If so you should test them for a good 15-20 matches . No point again going back to DK etc. It should be youngsters only and you should not try 4-5 options with 4-5 matches to each. That where assessment of potential by selectors & TM is crucial. Straight Drive Posted January 14, 2020 Posted January 14, 2020 In whatever matches Rahul, Iyer, Pant and Gill have played, only Iyer has performed and shown that if one has quality he can deliver a good ODI average and a good ODI strike rate. He is the one who deserves a spot in ODI 11 .Clearly the best of the new lot. Frustrated 1

His struggle against quality seam bowling is evident.

That combo is probably the best of all new players in ODI cricket amongst all teams.

He is very promising, attacking player, excellent timing and a competent keeper. With age on his side he will only get better. My only qualm is that Pant is struggling in the national side. The pressure, focus, expectations have all taken a toll. This is no more the trailblazing youngster we saw at the start of 2019. So why prolong this suffering when he can work on his game elsewhere? Yeah, he should be dropped now, but not just for 3-4 months like u suggest but for atleast 1 year so he gets 1 full domestic season away from glare. Even KL was unnecessarily brought back into ODIs when clearly TM is still not sold on him. He shld hv been used only for T20s and otherwise released for FC, A tours.

Infact I have only come across his critics. I still believe he can only be successful in opening slot. Batting in middle order in ODIs is an extremely difficult art. Agreed, batting in middle order is very difficult for LOIs, you need to be a very versatile player to do that, you should have aura of calmness in case of collapse as well as fire to finish things off, this is why someone like Misbah was very good specially in early part of his career as a middle order player (started playing alot slower in later part of career due to age). Plus batting in middle overs will expose you to different challenges from spin bowling to a random in between change towards pace (will test patience, focus and game scenario analysis). Pant will struggle like Rohit as a middle order player.

Raina for his consistecy got dropped at start That approach came with less risk taking which made him a diff player that approach wont work today with increased target. Today we need someone in butler mould not dhoni U want pant who has played 1-2 yrs to bat like dhoni raina yuvi with 5-7 yrs of international cricket maturity thats not possible Raina's ODI average is more than Pant's List A average. Maybe you'd like to take a look at that before hyping up Pant in ODIs. We don't need Butler right now. Stop comparing us with England. We don't even have a Morgan and Stokes and you want Butler. Dhoni after one year of playing ODI cricket was already averaging over 45. In 2 years, he was already the ICC No. 1 ranked ODI Batsman. Obviously, you can't find batsmen who play like that at the international level so easily, but I'm sure you could find players who are doing better than Pant is doing in ODIs right now. Even Samson would be averaging more than 27 if he got the chance.

express bowling Posted January 14, 2020 Posted January 14, 2020 (edited) Navdeep Saini was bowling at express pace and bowling really well in FC since 2017-18. But is yet yet to debut in tests, despite being 27. Md.Siraj picked up 40 wickets from only 5 Unofficial Tests in 2018. Shardul debuted in tests and he has not played a single test Shubman Gill is still waiting in the wings despite being a superlative FC performer and being considered.a rare talent. Shivam Mavi was not a part of our Unofficial Test team ( before injury ) despite bowling 145 k+ and averaging in the low 20s in FC Prasidh Krishna was not a part of our 50 over A-team ... despite bowling 140 k to 150 k and bowling well in the shorter formats. Pant has been put under undue pressure by some loose statements by the TM, selectors and commentators. But he is getting a lot of chances, unlike the players mentioned above. It is high time he performs a bit better as a LOI batsman. Edited January 14, 2020 by express bowling Mosher, Sgattick10, Unstable Joe and 2 others 1 4

People tend to forget that a lot of promising players were dropped early on after a lot of chances that they didn’t cash in on so that they can go back and work their game. My only concern is Pant being lost in the shuffle. If TM actually either have people keeping an eye on his progress or themselves keep a track of him I am all up for him being out of the scheme of things for a while . I think Saha has him covered in tests and LoI there are other guys who can be tried. However TM is useless and my fear is Pant will be falling off the radar, so for his sake and ours as fans hope he picks up soon because clock is ticking. Cricwala and Mosher 2

You're the one who's comparing him to Butler and now you're saying don't compare them. If you're "far more mature" at 25-26 then let Pant go play domestic till then. Play Samson who's older. Samson averages more than Pant does in List A cricket. He can't do a whole lot worse than Pant is right now.

Pant starting out at 26 and will end up at... 15? By the time Dhoni became ODI captain, Raina was already a regular in the ODI set-up anyway. This is international cricket. If Pant can't deal with his place being in danger then that speaks volumes about his mental fragility. Either cope up with the pressure of international cricket or make way for someone else. I'm not a big fan of Samson, but he doesn't have to do much because Pant already set the standard pretty low. The one thing you know about Samson is that he won't get out playing blind Afridi-esque swings to cow corner in crunch situations. Pant hasn't done well in List A cricket anyway so he's not owed anything in ODIs. Frustrated 1
