I think he is being saved for test matches. With Bhuvi being injured and Umesh’s overseas record.

 

With ODis being irrelevant right now compared to tests and T20s it will be dumb to play him

in OdIs and then not get a T20 game or test match.

 

However don’t think TM has such long term planning.

Yes and I am ok with that. Umesh has been lethal in the last few series and while he is always good in India and mediocre abroad let’s hope he has done a Shami who has become an allround bowler as even he suffered from similar issues early on of being good at home and mediocre elsewhere.

 

However if you have to take a gamble we should go with Saini but based on Kohli’s track record we will see Umesh first and then lose and then immediately there will be an impulse decision to pick Saini and surprisingly it will work for Virat and then he will go back to the same old safe combo once Bhuvi and Ishant are back.

Saini will not be part of our t20 squad and even if he makes it he will mostly warm benches watching Chahars,Thakurs reaching Burj Khalifa heights in Aus this year

Shami wasnt bad overseas its just he didnt have the fitness to maintain his intensity throughout and also lack of experience n support from other end

Problem with umesh is he cant control kookabura or duke the way he can control SG. Two completely diff problems

Got to disagree with the 2nd sentence.  LOI bowling and Test bowling are different.  Saini is an attacking bowler whose aggression may ruin his LOI figures, but the same aggression will reap test rewards.  Now, if you mean that he must get some practice in a couple of LOIs so he can gauge the conditions etc., sure.  But not "prove himself."  

 

Moreover, Umesh Yadav's away bowling stats are much worse than his home stats.  So, playing him abroad is not automatic. 

 

Just for fun, I'd love to see this test team in NZ - long tail, but a shudder-worthy Indian pace battery.

Umesh's recent wickets against South Africa were impressive. Top of off stump line that is useful anywhere.  Shouldn't be such a bad choice.

Question is ... can he bowl that length outside Asia ... and can he adapt to bowling with a different ball  ?

 

Umesh is not someone who adapts quickly ... and this is a short test series.

He's not been getting a consistent run in overseas recently. For NZ tests, I'm more worried about day 4 and 5 pitches which are the flattest in cricket. we have already lost Ishant, hope we don't lose anyone else.

While that is true ...  Umesh bowled without any intensity in the 2nd tests in England and Australia, when he got his chances.

 

He was down on pace, accuracy and enthusiasm in those 2 tests.

 

If he had bowled with fire and enthusiasm in those 2 tests, like he did against BD in India, he would have got more chances in SENA in 2018-19.

Also can hit sixes on will. He hit some 5 sixes against sa..based on Kohli selection of  bowlers criteria, he seems best suited for selection.

So, here goes our test series pace attack in NZ.

 

Umesh for his 6 hitting ability.

 

Chahar because he took some wickets in T20s against those power hitters who wanted to hit him to Mars but perished. He may get wickets in NZ tests too, if their batters get greedy and want to hit him to Uranus.

 

Thakur because of his connections, batting ability and  " fat short man bowling comic relief  ". 

 

 

 

Bumrah can be kept fresh for those important bilateral T20Is against Bangladesh, Sri Lanka etc. 

 

Saini is jet lagged I hear.  Needs to rest for a couple of months to get ok.  3 months if it is a serious case of jet lag. One cannot be too careful with one's health.

 

Shami cannot play because he needs rest after playing all these important T20Is.

A young and new bowler like Saini needs to bowl more and more in these conditions to get better.

 

If he is in the plans for test matches ... and he should be ... then he needs to play most matches from now on.
