Goals that TM should Aim for in next 6 ODI's

We have 6 more ODI before IPL and TM shud set out some goals as ODI cricket shudnt take a back seat with 2-t20Wc coming. Some ideas shud be set right and followed in these 6 games so we find some answers for ODI cricket. We play 3 ODI against NZ and then 3 against

  1. Decide KL Rahul batting position- since dhawan is out it doesnt mean they ll open with Rahul and send him back in Middle once dhawan is back. Decide what is KL Role if u see him in middle order then give him 6 games to set in middle order.
  2. Decide if Dhawan is still in scheme and if so tell the backup opener- If Dhawan is still in scheme play the backup opener Shaw and communicate to him so he doesnt feel cheated. Also If dhawan is in plan make shaw open not KL .
  3. No more Games to Jadhav- this has been happening so lets stick to it as well
  4. Manish/Pant- whoever they decide to go with give him all 6 games. I wud want pant to get all games but manish has done everything right.
  5. Rest Rohit n Kohli both from ODI series against SA- thats an ordinary side no need to play both and KL showed he can captain so give them break so we can give another player a chance.
  6. Saini shud play all 6 games- he looks a perfect addition to guys like shami, bumrah and before t20 Wc he needs as much international Exp as possible so give him.
  7. Bumrah n Shami can be rested in ODI series against Sa- I dont knw who is fit to replace them but we shud look at 1-2 more options for LOI backup bowling with so many injuries going around and their workload mngmt is also important.
  8. If Hardik is fit for Sa series let him play domestic rather rushing him- at no point shud he be rushed as he is very important for LOI setup
  9. Rest one of Kohli or Rohit incase we win Nz series in 1st games- Ill want them to rest one of them so we can give chance to whoever among manish or pandey sits out in last game.
  10. Distribute games among kulcha- Both are in the phase when teams have soughted them out at this point they need backing. Both can be even played together against SA series incase shami n bumrah are rested and anyways we dont have many fit bowlers up for for LOI selection

Good point about resting Shami and Bumrah. Eng have rested their gun players for ODIs against SA and have picked them for T20s. I think that's a prudent idea.

With manish doing well it has become tough for pant but somehow pant needs to be given as much opportunities

Both Manish and Pant should be in scheme of things. Let Manish be at 5 and Pant be at 6 to start with but can be reversed based on match demand. And I agree, both of them should play all 6 matches. Infact I am fine if Rohit takes more time to recover before ODIs. It could be then, Shaw, Rahul, Kohli, Iyer, Pandey, Pant.

That works in t20 only but now we dont have t20 before IPL coz in ODI if rahul bats at 5 only one among manish n pant can play and now we have 6 ODI

with Rahul they have to decide if he they wanna make him open or in middle , they can change his position every series as it doesnt allow a player to plan his game n work it over a period of time

Find proper potential alrounders and groom them.

I have four names Abhishek Sharma, Anukul Roy both spin alrounderd, Darshan Nalkande, Abhimanyu Singh Rajpoot seam alrounders. Both bowl at good pace and aren't trundlers like Shankar, Dubey. Both are 20-21.

It is important to find players who are good at their primary skill and won't be a compromise as a batsman or bowler.

If he is in the top 6 or 7 then he should be good enough to be chosen just as a batsman.

If he is coming at 8 to 11, maybe 7 too, then he should be able to play just as the bowler.

The other ability should be in addition to the above.

I think Axar Patel 2.0 at No.7 can give us this.  Potentially good LOI bowler and big hitter now.

A proper spinner at 7 allows us to play 3 frontline pacers too.  Bumrah, Saini and Shami in the same team, had made our ODI bowling very good in the last series.

Too many bits and pieces players are coming through in the name of all-rounders. Hardik is the only good one in LOIs, who can and should bat at 6.

Shaw should be the backup opener in ODIs.  And play this ODI series in NZ.

It is better to fix Rahul at 5 in ODIs as finisher cum keeper, even when Dhawan is not there.

I really hope the TM doesnt mess this up again, let Rahul play at 5 for a while. He has shown adaptability but they should not force him into a different role every other series. This could also be the only way to get Shaw in the scheme of things

Yes. That's why I took only these four names. They have at least one Dept they are quite good at and it is for long term development. We can groom these 4 for next 2_3 years. Likes of Shankar/Dubey aren't alrounders. They are part-time bowlers.

Mavi, Nagarkoti and Rahul Chahar are good candidates for bowling all-rounder slots of 8 and 9.  And Bishnoi after that.

These 4 can get into the side as good bowlers only.

Nalkande comes after these 4 as a bowling all-rounder.  I say after because his bowling may not be as good as the above 4.

Yashasvi Jaiswal can be groomed as a proper batting all-rounder.

Mavi, Nagarkoti, Chahar all three in batting are like BK, maybe even worse. Don't put your money on them.  They weren't alrounders in u19, so, most probably they won't be at top level too. Nagarkoti may surprise us with batting but the other two highly doubtful. Bishnoi is an alrounder at u19. So not comparable to other three.  Nalkande too has the ability to be as good with the ball and is a big hitter. At 6, 7, 8, you need guys who can hit the ball hard, hit sixes and fours.

I  would not look at the ODI series in NZ in isolation to tests, which are a part of WTC and therefore more important than the ODI series which could as well have been replaced with a test or more tour games.

I would use this ODI series to prepare for the test series as well esp. in lieu of more tour games ( Ind can do poorly in 1st test so it may become difficult to win the series)

  • Open with Agarwal & Shaw so they can prepare for tests as well
  • Pant at 3 to help him develop his game and also because he is likely to be in the test squad
  • Kohli at 4. He plays there in tests too. The sky is not going to fall if he bats at 4 in a random ODI series
  • Rotate Kuldeep and Chahal.  If Kuldeep gets to play tests, do not expose him much in ODIs
  • Rotate Bumrah and Shami. So they remain fit (less exposure to injuries as well) and also get to bowl a few overs in match conditions

seems to me gopal is a better AR than the above trio insofar as experince in terms of batting/bowling is concerned.

Gopal batting isn't suited to LOIs. In fact, he used to be a top order batsman at u19  and u23 but once he got success with his bowling in ranji trophy, he hardly batted in top 6 for Karnataka.
