Trichromatic Posted May 31, 2020 Posted May 31, 2020 Quote The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday nominated India opener Rohit Sharma for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award 2020 while pacer Ishant Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and India women’s cricketer Deepti Sharma have been nominated for the Arjuna Awards. The board released an official statement in this regard. The players have been nominated as per the guidelines mentioned by the sports ministry, who had sought invitations for the respective awards with the period of consideration beginning January 1, 2016 till December 31, 2019. Rohit became the first player in the history to score five ODI centuries in a single edition of the World Cup. He was also named the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year for 2019. He holds the record of becoming the first player to score twin centuries in his maiden Test appearance and the first batsman to score four T20I centuries. Meanwhile, Rohit’s opening partner Shikhar holds the record to score the fastest century in red-ball cricket on debut. He is also the only batsman in the world to have to won consecutive golden bats in the ICC Champions Trophy. Among other records, Dhawan is the quickest Indian batsman to complete 2000 and 3000 runs in the 50-over format and the second-fastest from the country to score 4000 and 5000 runs in the same format. https://indianexpress.com/article/sports/cricket/bcci-nominations-khel-ratna-arjuna-awards-rohit-sharma-shikhar-dhawan-ishant-sharma-deepti-sharma-6434785/ JUST IN : The BCCI nominates Mr @ImRo45 for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award 2020 while Mr @ImIshant, Mr @SDhawan25 and Ms @Deepti_Sharma06 have been nominated for Arjuna Awards.More details here - https://t.co/s0n0LfvyfF pic.twitter.com/deDRBGVBRv— BCCI (@BCCI) May 30, 2020
Gollum Posted June 1, 2020 Posted June 1, 2020 (edited) Rohit Sharma dosn't deserve <change the *ing name> Khel Ratna, period. Started in 1991 when Vishy Anand was the first to receive it. Since then only the following cricketers have been given the honour: Sachin (1st cricketer in 1997-98) Dhoni Kohli No Kapil (played till 1994), Kumble, Dravid, Sehwag, Dada, Laxman, Yuvraj etc. More than half of them were never nominated by BCCI, even stalwarts like Kumble, Kapil, Sehwag who will be in AT Indian XI. Sorry Rohit is out of place on that list, hope he is edged out. One can argue that he is better than a few other sportspersons who have been given the award, but in cricket there must be a more fair process, sans involvement of sponsors and the Buntys of the world. Now @rkt.india and @maniac won't like to hear this, one likes opposing just for the sake of it, the other is a Sharma bhakt, bring it on !!!! Edited June 1, 2020 by Gollum Nikola and SK_IH 2
Gollum Posted August 29, 2020 Posted August 29, 2020 Every damn thing (stadiums, bridges, roads, govt hospitals/colleges, airport terminals, govt schemes....) in India named after those fake Gandhis: Nehru, IG, RG. Modi must rename this award after an Indian sporting legend: Dhyan Chand, Balbir Singh Sr, KD Jadhav, Amritraj, Paes, Malleswari, Abhinav Bindra, Sushil Kumar...so many candidates. Congrats Ro beetle 1
Gollum Posted August 29, 2020 Posted August 29, 2020 4th cricketer to get India's highest sporting honour...started in 1991 when Viswanathan Anand was the first recipient 1998 Sachin 2007 Dhoni 2018 Kohli 2020 Rohit Suhaan 1
SK_IH Posted August 29, 2020 Posted August 29, 2020 I am a big fan of Rohit but certainly he does not deserve Khel Ratna award. Nikola and Gollum 2

Come to think of it, Dhoni received it in 2007, merely 3 years after debut which was premature. Had he got it post 2011 WC win it would have been acceptable. I have no idea about the process of selection. Kapil played till 1994, he wasn't worthy? Or so many other big names of Indian cricket? SK_IH 1

gattaca Posted August 29, 2020 Posted August 29, 2020 (edited) The cutoff for cricketers should be much higher. Only once in a generation talent should get these awards. At least they can give these awards to kabbadi, badminton or track athletes. The other sportspersons had to compete against all odds and paid very little compared to cricketers. Suhaan Posted August 29, 2020 Posted August 29, 2020 (edited) Rohit is disqualified just because he flopped in red ball cricket People may disqualify dhoni using same parameter, but man has won 3 icc trophies so deserves it Maybe 4 ipl trophies have prompted Jay Shah to recommend his name to Modi kaka(just joking, don't want to offend people here) I hate the award name, but people will go to kopbhavan if Modi kaka changes its name citing threat to democracy allegations (i apologise again if i offend people yet another time) Edited August 29, 2020 by Suhaan coffee_rules 1

Gollum Posted August 29, 2020 Posted August 29, 2020 Can't deny the role of sponsors/brands/agents in Indian cricket these days. A real headache when financial (+ other misc) incentives of some individuals override Team India's best interests, case in point being our top 3 personnel/approach in white ball formats. SK_IH 1
coffee_rules Posted August 29, 2020 Posted August 29, 2020 (edited) Only 4 recipients of this prestigious award for some reason continued by all governments to be named after Rajiv Gandhi. Tendulkar, Dhoni, Kohli and now Rohit Reward(s) ₹25 lakh (US$35,000) These people are so rich, they should announce to give this taxpayer’s money to charity Edited August 29, 2020 by coffee_rules
