wanted_desi Posted November 7, 2020 Posted November 7, 2020 (edited) I know It is still about 3 years away, but again before 12 months, we got this saying oh its too late to try new guys in team. It seems like there are no plans looking forward to 2023: Rohit Sharma and Dhawan aren't going to be at same level as 2019 WC as age is catching up to them. Who is back up opener? KL Rahul? But he is going to be keeping wickets it seems like, so that he won't be able to open. Is Shubman really an Ideal opener, to me he looks more of someone who can really do job in middle order taking singles and keeping SR of 90-100. It is really time team management to test Mayank till then, he is really someone who is playing with right positive mind at opening. Something which we have lacked this whole decade. Look at score after 10 overs in WC 2011, we used to be really ahead every other team. If it wasn't up for that start, we would have have caught short in Semi-Final, where Pakistan took control in middle overs. Hence, Positive approach to opening is needed, if we want to win WC. Majestic Posted November 7, 2020 Posted November 7, 2020 (edited) I think it will be Rohit and Mayank/Rahul/Gill. The contenders are:- Mayank Agarwal KL Rahul Shubhman Gill Prithvi Shaw Devdutt Paddikal Gill can be played in M.O as posters are saying due to his strike rotation vs spin but not sure what we will do of him after 35 overs because of his lack of striking ability. I will persist with Iyer at 4, looks good vs spin, can play the anchor role and take on bowlers as well after 35 overs. Edited November 7, 2020 by Majestic
Serpico Posted November 7, 2020 Posted November 7, 2020 Openers are the least of our worries, almost all of our next gen talent are openers and top order batsmen. I'm sure we can find a couple of them in decent form by 2023. What we should be really looking for are lower order hitters. Hopefully samson and pant will become consistent by then. Austin 3:!6 1
Lone Wolf Posted November 7, 2020 Posted November 7, 2020 Ruturaj & Mayank maybe the guys. I think Gill would be a Test regular but not ODI Austin 3:!6 1
bowl_out Posted November 7, 2020 Posted November 7, 2020 We have enough options for openers - Devdutt, Mayank, KL, Ruturaj, Shaw, Gill Middle and lower middle order are concerning.. Kohli, Iyer, Pandey, Pant, Samson, Kishan looks to be the pool, and there's lot of inconsistency there. And the fifth bowling option.. Is Jadeja still going to stick on? Hardik doesn't seem like he can give 10 overs.. Should Vijay Shankar be played and have 10 overs be bowled between him and Hardik?
prudent_kreeda Posted November 7, 2020 Posted November 7, 2020 Somewhere down the line , there needs to be a real good assessment of a player's suitability for a particular role, his temperament , potential and also looking at the kind of bowling /batting one will face in that role and chances of his success in that role . As an example , Mayank may look very good in SC but you also need to look his batting in NZ conditions when balls seamed. He was cut in half so many times in PP. other factors like play vs Pace , Spin , temperament will also to be counted . We cannot simply list out 5-6 guys for one spot as each one needs at least 10-12 games to assess . There is simply not enough games for this before WC . May be something like below can be worked out - 1) Have a group of some of the best batting legends + NCA - Dravid to assess players more suitable for a particular role and the feedback should be provided to the selectors . 2) There should a specific action plan with pointers re: areas which require improvements and for batters , should have workout sessions at NCA under Dravid's supervision for those selected few to work on action plans suggested. 3) Selectors can filter based on current showing of these players and make a list of 2 -3 players per role . They should be made to play international games and should be given at least 10 games . 4) Appoint a new Coach -a known problem solver and who has shown results in bringing in further development in players . diga 1
diga Posted November 7, 2020 Posted November 7, 2020 BTW where is the 2023 world cup going to be held? If in India, I think we need to search for proper bowlers and ODI batting should take care of itself
sandeep Posted November 8, 2020 Posted November 8, 2020 If India's current ODI top 3 keep squatting in those money-making slots till the WC, India is guaranteed to lose. Oh we will still "make the semi-finals" though. SK_IH 1

Cricketics Posted November 9, 2020 Posted November 9, 2020 Take a punt and play Paddikal in one of the coming series. Its fine if some of these players fail overseas and do well in India. World cup is in India, scoring overseas is overrated in ODI’s. Its a big deal in test matches but not in ODI’s. Give Paddikkal a run and also Ishan Kishan. Paddikal-Mayank-Kohli-Shubman as top 4 can not too bad if the two openers and Gill have played over 15-20 games together before wc at least.

I like the idea of Kishan Opening. Perhaps that would be like going ultra aggressive option like England does. Attack in the first ten. Score 70-80 runs. Paddikal is still too raw for me. His game after the Powerplay is not up to the mark.
Vickydev Posted November 9, 2020 Posted November 9, 2020 3 years is a lot of time. Will probably have Jaiswal ready by then. Shaw might have got his footwork fixed too. Even then we have enough cover in Mayank, Gill, Padikkal, maybe even Kishan or Pant as an outside choice. We have tons of talent available for those spots. Critical is the Kohli, Iyer, Rahul, Pandya MO axis sticks around strongly till then. They can make this side brutal tbh.
