Rank the Most Valuable all-rounders only for batting and bowling: Chris Cairns vs. Ben Stokes vs. Flintoff vs. Kapil Dev vs. Botham vs. Immy.

1. Botham

2. Kapil Dev

3. Ben Stokes

4. Immy

5. Chris Cairns

6. Flintoff

Reasons:

1. Ben Stokes peak is awesome, he is probably the best batsmen in the list, but as a bowler his longetivity of performance still needs some more years before putting him ahead of 1 and 2.

2. Chris Cairns is a cracker bowler and batter, its a pity how soon he retired and got himself in a fix with ICL. Flintoff - great bowler but still lacked reliability with the bat. Had a great Ashes and 30+ average - but always felt he could only bat 1 way.

3. Immy the bottle cap bowling cheat will never have my respect.

Recency bias

Nostalgia bias. Works both ways.

But to answer the question, has to be Imran right? Apparently he is a cheat so I am going with Hadlee. He carried a weaker team by himself.

Jogindar Sharma

Imran Khan.

Lol Imran that low. C'mon bro? Is it cause he was a cheater?

I would personally put imran at 2 but he did cheat so that's there.

Peak 45 tests

for batting and bowling AR choices - Sobers and Hadlee pick themselves in the respective category

Among those being discussed here in tests:

Botham (peak)

Imran (potency with the ball - no pun intended)

Kapil

Stokes - needs to bowl more overs per inning to be rated higher as an AR (Similarly, Kallis). Best batsman/batting AR among this group though!

Flintoff

Cairns

Imran has a test batting average of 37 and bowling average of 22.

Kapil has a batting average of 29 and bowling average of 31.

Botham has a batting average of 34 and bowling average of 28.

Hadlee has a batting average of 26 and bowling average of 22.

Going by these stats,

Imran > Hadlee > Botham > Kapil.

Owing to the fact that theres a lot of if's and but's to Imran's record, I am not going to rank the all-rounders. At a personal level, I rate Chris Cairns high because just like Kapil, he played with a very weak team and still performed. More than decent pace,  genuine spearhead of his team, and a genuine batsman when required.

Heath Streak is another I feel who is quite under rated. Had he played for a stronger team, his stats may have been different.

Of the lot, Botham maybe a natural choice, but I wonder if thats due to folk lores. I mean,, Flintoff was a tremendous player. And if Botham was better than Flintoff, he would have been out of this world.

If cheating is not considered, Imran tops the list. If it is, Botham, Kapil, FLintoff and perhaps Cairns!

Everyone > Imran

In that era, everyone used it though. Read from some of interviews of Darren Gough.

Cheating or no cheating, Imran was not better batsman than either Botham or Kapil dev. They were hands down better batsmen than Imran Khan ever was, Imran was mostly a bowler who could bat.

Botham is by far the best all rounder in modern era. For his first 50 odd tests there was nothing Botham could not do, he was an amazing bowler who averaged  in low 20s for his first 200 wickets and 38 or 39 with 11 100s .

Flintoff is not even close to Botham. Kapil Dev was almost an amaetur with just raw talent. If Kapil had the avenues to polish his skills like Hadlee or Imran in country cricket, he would have become far better allrounder but he is second after Botham. Cairns and others are not even close to either  Botham or Kapil.

Why didn't our players like Kapil joined county cricket back then? Any idea?
