Not sure if Jasprit Bumrah should be picked for second Test against England: Gautam Gambhir

Former India batsman Gautam Gambhir believes premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah should not be picked in the playing XI for the upcoming second Test against England. Bumrah, who recently recovered from an abdominal strain suffered in Australia, is playing his first Test match in India. He is part of the playing XI in the ongoing first Test against England at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Considering the length of the current tour, Gambhir feels it will be wise for the Indian team management to manage Bumrah's workload accordingly. India have Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur in the squad in case they decide to rest Bumrah, who had never played a Test match in India before taking the field against England in the Chennai Test on Friday.

"100 percent, absolutely. I'm not even sure whether Bumrah should be picked for the second Test match. I think India should preserve him for the pink-ball Test match. See, Jasprit Bumrah is an X-Factor in the series, irrespective of what surfaces to play on and you've got to keep that in mind too," Gambhir said on ESPNCricinfo.

Bumrah has been India's pace spearhead across formats for the last few years and has been key to the team's success. Gambhir said risking an injury to Bumrah can put India in trouble going ahead in the ongoing series. India are scheduled to play four Tests, 5 T20Is and 3 ODIs against the visitors.

"Jasprit Bumrah you can't just keep bowling for longer sessions. Give him that short burst of three overs to try and pick a quick wicket, but not long spells because Bumrah is going to be very important going forward in the series. And if something happens to him, India is going to be in serious trouble," said Gambhir.

Oh god awful news ... Bumrah is a diamond and if he’s not 100% should not be played. Can’t afford to risk him. I’m confident Siraj or even Shardul can perform well against this English side

Looks like bubble is getting the better of him. He should be given rest from the ODI and T20 series. Play him two more tests, that's it.

He debuted in Jan'2018 and since then only played 18 tests , so honestly it is not like so many tests. We should not play him in meaningless LOI formats.

But who has said that he is not a 100%.

Bowled 36 overs at full pace and good accuracy in the 1st innings. Was hitting 140 k+ in the 36th over too.

Do we need him on the Chennai pitch? He can play the other two tests

It would have been an easier decision if we had won the first test or a couple among Jadeja, Shami and Umesh were available.

In this situation, it won't be easy to rest him. Ashwin will be the only strike bowler then.

If we lose the 2nd test then it is basically bye bye test championship final

Why doesn't Bumrah swing the SG ball? He swung the red duke in West Indies like a banana at 134 kph and sent stumps flying, he was bowling much faster here in Chennai test.

Its the pitch and condition, he will swing in next 2 matches after that. Anderson's reverse swing on day 5 was all pitch, not in air. When he went round the wicket to Pant, the reverse swing disappeared

New SG ball does not swing much. Anderson could not swing it either.

Bumrah reverse swung the ball both ways with the older SG ball. Got big swing often enough.

This usually happens after 15 overs or so.
