I am a bit worried about Gill

Again wrong examples..  Mayank barring Rory Burns is the only opener to hit a 50 in Caribbean for almost 3 years..  Nasser said Carribean pitches these days are nightmare for openers.  No opener is surviving there with juicy bouncy wickets with duke ball..  KL Rahul looked like a Tailender there.

In NZ funnily Mayank was our Top run scorer in the series...  So on that basis likes of Rahane Pujara etc should be long gone.

Rahane n pujara isnt even question coz he doesnt compete with them and rahane in his 1st cycle of overseas was damn good

And england pitches wud be easy with anderson n broad ???

KL rahul was the same guy who made 150 in WI in his 1st tour, ur taking example of a tour when he was in his worst phase. In that phase he wud have struggled on pattas also

In NZ- yea no one scored but so didnt he - at the ends it considered as failure

Apart from Rohit, every Indian batsman has failed in this test series. Which means batting conditions have not been easy. Gill's failures have to be seen in this light.

Moreover, young players invariably go through rough patches during the early parts of their careers. It is inevitable. And it is at this stage that they need to be supported.

Pant has not been treated well during his struggles. Same case with Shaw.

We should not do the same with Gill. He needs to be backed during this phase.

Problems regarding having minor technical issues are over-rated. Even Bradman, Richards and Lara had them. The good players find a way to score runs despite such issues.

Exactly its not at all major

Need to look at the opening situation in perspective.

Contenders for the 2nd opening slot along with Rohit:

Gill (Age 21) - Average 34

Shaw (Age 21) - Average 42

Mayank (Age 30) - Average 45

Kl Rahul (Age 29) - Average 34

Usually the most successful batsmen are the ones who are playing all formats like Kohli & Rohit. Out of the above I believe KL Rahul should be given a chance again, he is at a similar stage where Rohit was and he has tightened up his technique.

He's not a test match opener.  Never was. He converted to one because middle order is too clogged, and becoming test opener was the way to get into the national team.

Now either he adjusts his game to make it work, or pays the price.

at what position did he play under19 matches? He will pay price if he flops in England.

Even before his dismissal, he was playing away from the body with literally no foot movement. That is a death wish in Eng. The lbw again, missed a straight ball, for a natural opener, it is bread and butter. This is India, and this pitch is not a difficult one. He likes to play his shots, perfect to replace Rahane.  Glad, it was umpires’ call, India didn’t lose a review

has any indian opener succeeded in eng ?

Gavaskar averaged 41. Jaffer & DK had good series in 2007. In current era it's even more tough to score against anderson and broad. Doubt any opener from any country has done well over multiple series. Only one i can remember is chris rogers in 2013/15.

i agree.he has the best technique out of the 4.no reason to to play  Gill as an opener where  he is a sitting duck if the ball moves.

They won't make any changes until the WTC..

We need to be patient with the youngster.. The innings he played at Gabba was masterclass.. Hope he gets back to that form soon for WTC final

I am not taking examples or not picking only stating facts..  Whenever Rahul & Mayank played together..  Mayank outscored him & then got to cash in on a bumper home season where he ended up rivalling Bradman.

2016 pitches & 2019 pitches of WI are as different as 2014 Aus pitches & 2021 ones.  The fact ever since Dukes balls are being used on Greenish WI pitches since 2018 being opener there is hard Job..  That's why only two half centurions since that period in Mayank & Burns...  No other not even the home side.

I can't  say anything for Eng as Mayank never got to play there in India shirts..  He may get as we know how it goes with Indian openers on Overseas tours.

In NZ no being the team's highest run scorer doesn't counts as a failure especially not on those doctored disgraceful pitches.  Facing the new ball there is tough.   Pakistan got much easier pitches & we saw what happened with their openers like Masood who even scored a ton in England with dukes ball so here goes that argument.

Regarding Gill it's clear he is not a genuine opener & sooner TM realize it will be better.. At the moment poor guy is only opening coz there isn't a spot otherwise.  He should replace one among Rahane or Pujara if any of them fails.

I'd still play him in WTC final though & see how he goes with the dukes vs Boult Southee.

Do we have a better option ? Other options also has inexperience n severe technical deficiencies . This actually is best phase for coz teams wont have enough of him as say after an year  or so

Honestly Vihari as opener makes more sense.

5 runs of 50 balls more useful than a 12 run of 15 ball Gill for Wtc finals.(if we make it)

In the main series by all means revert. I personally want him to succeed. He is 21 and this can be corrected.

Those saying Gill replacing Rahane will be safe etc, if it gets overcast no matter how old the ball there will be swing.

Again loads of difference Williamson has covered his off stump & Gill is visible..  WS is trying to cover the swing most likely here..  Also look at the back leg of Gill..  Absurd comparison overall.  Gill's backlift also slightly wider & head position is also different.  Gill's is falling over.

No point in Comparison with one of the best technical batter currently with a young guy who has just started & needs big improvements.  And Williamson is playing for the line here.

I dont understand what people mean Gill is not a test match opener. If you mean in FC, that doesnt mean anything. Test cricket is leagues ahead of FC and if he was capable enough of facing Starc, Cummins, Hazlewood on Australian wickets and that too on debut after 36 A.O and was successful, I dont know what could convince anyone he is the real deal.

Seems as if one needs to score century in every game to keep others not doubting a player's ability. Young players will have ups and downs, Sachin failed to score a century in ODIs till a few years into his international career.  I remember Dravid also had to go through a rough patch at the start of his career. This guy barely failed in a few games. This is all part of the learning curve.

As of now no need for drastic measures, such measures is what makes team unstable
