I am a bit worried about Gill

He is more than ok against Seam. But struggles with a bit of swing. 

 

If india make it to WTC when we have next 6 tests in England. He is going to be a sitting duck as opener unless is tightens his stance.

 

I have a statement on Gill. If he makes it out of these 5/6 tests with an average of 35 or above he will have a good international career. Both Broad and Anderson will be much more potent. NZ (if we make it to WTC have Boult)

I observed even in Australia that he had lazy footwork ,there is mo way he is going to survive in international cricket opening. he needs to play at 3 or 4.

Needs to be a little more busy... he's far too relaxed I feel. But it ay work for him. Have seen players thrive this way too..

I wouldnt be surprised to see India look at Mayank again to open.

Gill has a more tighter technique than Shaw and Mayank and should be persisted. Yes, he too has flaws wih the incoming deliveries which we all knew but it is more apparent with Shaw and Mayank. Hence, making a change again will be wrong.

 

Gill is future of Indian cricket and he should be persisted.

Gill has his own technique just because he doesn't streches his eye balls like kohli or gives a trigger movement like KP in his stance doesn't mean he's lazy

 

Scoring has been quite difficult for even our more celebrated batsmen,yes there should be criticism but not like he's lazy,careless etc

• When a young player does well dont pin your hopes on him like he has already become an answer to every problem. In past yr or so its been done with mayank, iyer when many kept harping had they been batting at 4 in Wc we wud have won. Now many thought after Aus tour that Gill is at level where Rohit kohli are now. 
• At start of career most players will have ups n down and thats what will make them better player or cut their career short
• Everyone has some issues which will be found out sooner or later 
• Have patience- Let them fail coz thats what will make them better

I think he'll be given backing as long as India wins..  But we know patience is not the thing with Kohli &,  TM.  However one must score runs at home.  Even 18 yo Shaw was doing this.

Also opening doesn't look like his position..  Even Moody on twitter said he should bat in Middle order to KP.   England will be tough & chances of him surviving are slim tbf..  No cushion of home runs as well.

Yes & above all the pitches have been not that straightforward. But one thing that I have noticed is his ordinary body language since that early dismissal in 2nd test. He has been cautious & stuck at the wicket. Shastri has his work cut out, apart from technical, there is need for some confidence boosting conversation.

Mayank was incredibly unlucky..  There is no doubt about it.  You don't dump a player who has been best opner in the world in one calendar year on the basis of two test failure one of which was when whole team got bundled outta 36.

Gill bats like an old man whose hand-eye coordination is failing.

 

Needs some coaching or domestic cricket to iron out the deficiencies. But he's not an opener, should be replacing Rahane in the middle order.

I have no issue with him failing. But the WTC will be a final. who knows when we will get another shot (if we make it through this test unbeaten).You cannot use a marque event to learn.

 

I remember on a tour of England, Sanjay Banger was the opener and blunted the new ball. It allowed the middle order to cash in. 

 

There is a time and place for learning. Steve Smith was dropped on the 2013 Ashes tour cause he was not cutting it. He went back and improved his game in the domestics and came back a different player.

Do we have a better option ? Other options also has inexperience n severe technical deficiencies . This actually is best phase for coz teams wont have enough of him as say after an year  or so

Nobody expected Gill would be a peak performer. Australian series, he did well for a debutant.Debutant doing well also mean bowlers have not done their homework yet on that batsman. Mayank also did well in his debut series against same Australian bowlers.

 

He missed a straight ball today and that is big technical issue for him.Bowlers around the world now know his weakness.He will get better if learns from his mistakes.People wanted him to play in odis too. Newcomers should not be playing in all formats.Let them do well in the formats they have been chosen before playing them in other formats.

• Mayank did fail in WI and NZ as welll 
• Mayank technique has sever issue like shaw specially against fast bowling which is what u face as opener
• N an answer ppl dont like to hear- gill qualitatively is a better batsman

Again wrong examples..  Mayank barring Rory Burns is the only opener to hit a 50 in Caribbean for almost 3 years..  Nasser said Carribean pitches these days are nightmare for openers.  No opener is surviving there with juicy bouncy wickets with duke ball..  KL Rahul looked like a Tailender there. 

In NZ funnily Mayank was our Top run scorer in the series...  So on that basis likes of Rahane Pujara etc should be long gone.

He's not a test match opener.  Never was. He converted to one because middle order is too clogged, and becoming test opener was the way to get into the national team.

 

Now either he adjusts his game to make it work, or pays the price.

Apart from Rohit, every Indian batsman has failed in this test series. Which means batting conditions have not been easy. Gill's failures have to be seen in this light. 

 

Moreover, young players invariably go through rough patches during the early parts of their careers. It is inevitable. And it is at this stage that they need to be supported.

 

Pant has not been treated well during his struggles. Same case with Shaw.

 

We should not do the same with Gill. He needs to be backed during this phase.

 

Problems regarding having minor technical issues are over-rated. Even Bradman, Richards and Lara had them. The good players find a way to score runs despite such issues.
