I have been manhandled by a group of black women in a bus in CA when I came in to this country. It is not easy to fight back, they are all close to 200 lbs and not weaklings. Plus the police will side with them in case of he says she says. When you are new to the country, you don't risk running into the police. Me and my friend returning from a mall in the bus, when we didn't have cars yet, were ragged by a bunch of big girls. Usual gay slurs and ethnic slurs, facking Indians taking our jobs, etc, there were no smart phones at that time. When we stared back, one of them dared us to touch her. It is not as easy as you think it is.

The way i see it, south asian people are often well represented in society (often rich and influential or high income ) - in fact very well represented. Is this specific to USA or certain states in the US or regions in Aus ? There is almost diversity risk with south Asians dominating certain regions in UK,Canada etc

lol :laugh: man damn.. i am sorry you had to go through it. But those were the times with no smartphones to record their shenanigans. its best to avoid some of the areas esp in public transport.. which area in California was this ?

bay area, crowd in a bus from the mall is always rowdy.  There were many people, nobody spoke or even cared, am sure it was amusing for them to see grown ass men getting ragged by a bunch of girls .

I don't want to stereotype the Chinese community in the US but I got yelled on and was told to "go back to my country" by a random Chinese woman. This was last year during peak COVID times, I assume she was targeted racially due to the Chinese virus narrative in US and she took all that anger out on me. But the point remains that Indians are easy targets because they do not have a victim complex and ask for racial approval.

 

I think the South Asian community should set an example by showing that you can progress if you respect the laws of the land and work hard instead of asking for approval.

In this thread, most of us are talking about individual racism. This is the form of racism that recent immigrants (last 100 yrs) experience on the street and in social contexts.   

 

In addition to experiencing individual racism, African Americans are victims of systemic or structural racism stemming from 400+ years of brutal oppression that kept them from doing anything to further their interests, giving them no opportunity to create wealth for themselves, and relegating them to inhuman status.  Brutality that none of us can claim to have experienced this in America.  

 

Yes, most of us came here with little and worked hard to get to where we are.  We "put our heads down and got it done."  But the system we entered was not stacked against us in ways that centuries of oppression had stacked it against African Americans.  We cannot expect them to "put their heads down and just get it done."  America was built on their shoulders and we are experiencing it after it was built.  They are not reaping the rewards of building it.  Let them be heard.
