Extreme limits of extra-ordinary underachievers and overachievers - how a 5 mil population country where cricket is the 3rd or 4th popular sport keeps shafting us in every major tournament

Our problem is that, because we are obsessed with one sport, we are expected to win all the time.

Unfortunately, doesn't work.

The other problem is that there aren't proper facilities for other sports in India, most of the money disappears in corruption etc, and Indian society in general is corrupt to the core. Won't find that happening in Western countries were you can pay a bribe to a police officer for example and get away with it.

These superfluous and irrelevant narratives aren't needed, **** happens and the more fancied team loses sometimes. Even Brazil are going through a lull and lose to some European nation you can barely point out on a map in football.

Don't kid yourself, it is their national sport! Yeah rugby might be more popular now but cricket's popularity hasn't exactly died down, not to mention Rugby season lasts much longer IIRC.

Their national sport is Aussie Rules Footy.

Cricket is 4 or 5 pegs down the list.

You're kidding right? Pretty sure every Western nation is corrupt as *, maybe not to the extent of India but you if you think corruption is just an India issue then you must've missed literally a billion other news pieces about money influencing policies in places like the US of A! The only biggest difference I say is the facade of trying to make it look fair/white on the surface. In India most corrupt officers just don't care about appearances.

Maybe today, in the 2k's cricket was easily among the top 3.

I am sure corruption happens in big companies, politics etc in the West, but unlike in India where all politician's are corrupt, where most of the politician's have criminal charges against them, where police will take a 100 rupee bribe, where politician's hold rallies for rapist, where crime against women is rampant, don't need to say anymore.

But lets all believe that India is an awesome country, and not look at any of the stats that indicate otherwise.

Australian football has the best national footprint of any football code. But VFL-AFL expansion has repeatedly ignored Tasmania, either on the basis it was commercially wrong to invest in a state with a population of less than 600,000 and an economy with a $32.1 billion GDP (compared with $288.3 billion in Queensland, where the AFL a decade ago preferred to make a $250 million investment in the Gold Coast Suns – a figure recouped in the record $2.5 billion television rights deal in 2015).

Conditions, conditions, conditions. Even post Sanga and Mahela SL has done clean sweep of Australia at home. That being said, NZ's captaincy and execution was relentless and flawless in this match. Having lost the WC in heartbreaking fashion, they deserve this win.

Yes it was a heartbreak but we are enduring these heartbreak for 8 years running continuously.

When will we see any accountability?

That being said if media uses the same logic that op has used I guarantee you public opinion will change & BCCI will be forced to act.  Cholki &,  his gangs will be dismantled forever

Conditions is a stupid excuse to give.. With our cricketing resources and talent pool, we can easily produce a team capable of challenging in any condition. Problem is we don't pick horses for courses... Pujara despite his continous failures in England, continues to be picked, same with Rahane. We love our most inform seamer out in Siraj to accommodate 2 spinners on the most swing friendly conditions you coukd get. Playing jadeja in the match was absolute stupidity

of course, but you have to be blind not to admit that if the WTC test is played in SA, Australia, West Indies or Asia, this NZ team would not be able to perform like this.

How do you know for sure? It’s not the conditions, it’s the bad captaincy, selection , no preparation, overconfidence and total lack of pride are the reasons Indian team will lose to NZ in any conditions.

NZ actually played slow deliberately to make an interesting match of it with this pathetic Indian team and keep the match interesting for the viewers.

Your general narrative and societal overview has nothing to do with what happens on the cricket field.

Didn't a second string India thump the Aussies in their own den coming off a 36 a.o. Indian society was beset with the same set of issues back in January as it is now. Didn't stop the team from winning the series.

If you must compare, a good metric would be $ spent per budding cricketer in NZ vs India by their respective clubs/state associations. Don't think Indian cricketers would fare too well. Most have to fend for themselves financially in their formative years. The NZers don't. Things are changing with a lot of money being pumped into cricket and scouts training kids early on.

I remember reading that Sachin used to take a public bus to go to Shivaji park for daily practice and used to get down 2 kms away coz he needed the money for his return fare and his mid day meal.

While not an ideal situation, it has been an important part of character building.

In NZ, the only sport that matters is Rugby.

It would be like India winning the Soccer World Cup. Thats how low of a priority it is in NZ.

Sobering.

I have travelled to most of these countries currently living in Australia, and I must say that in Australia and NZ we have a sporting culture. Even in Australia 25 million population and cricket is only a summer sport, NZ have rugby and 3 other sports before cricket and that too with a population of only 5 million. Any surprise that these countries always excel at the Olympics etc?

Norway and all those countries mentioned above all have tiny populations when compared to India and yet they do extremely well on the international sporting stage.

As I am living in Australia at the moment the winter sports are on like AFL (Australia Football League) and other winter sports in Australia, and it's a brutal game if any Indian watches it, then they have Rugby, Hockey, Volleyball, Swimming, Soccer (football) and many other sports.

The thing is Australians will try anything, and the kids in school are made to try different sports etc to find the sports that best suits them. And that goes for education as well, the education system in Australia is based on critical thinking, physical activity etc. And the teachers are highly qualified and motivated, unlike in India where kids are forced to learn everything by rote learning and then just vomiting that crap our again, and the teaches aren't qualified and very unmotivated.

Yes India is good a cricket, but when you have 1.35 billion people and cricket is the countries obsession India should be doing better. Would love to discuss these ideas, because I have always wondered why Indians don't know much about the world.

When I was living in India I thought I knew everything and would always chest thump about how wonderful and great India is, but then I started travelling and found out that India is not great at all, it's at the bottom of almost every list.

Australia, NZ, Europe etc have a good quality of life, when I was working in India my first job was in a call centre where you had to work 12 - 14 hours and get paid peanuts, in Australia that is unheard of. The company will ask you if you want to work overtime and pay you accordingly, the quality of life in these countries is amazing, even a taxi driver can own 2 or more houses and still save and enjoy life.

You can be filthy rich and sitting in a bar and you can have a great conversation with a cleaner, this is called dignity through labour and this is another thing lacking in India.

Sorry for the long post, turned into a bit of a rant, wonder if I should make a new thread so we can discuss these issues?

Being of Indian heritage, born in Australia, its not so much that it is brutal but rather almost all Indians do not have the athletic physique to AFL.

From memory, there has been one or two in the squads of a few teams, but I cant recall any Indian ever playing AFL.

I played at school and at amateur level, if you dont have the strength or the speed, you will get smashed. You need to have at least one of these assets, not to mention you also need to have the skill. The current generation of Indians, dont have their fathers to guide them and teach them to play AFL/Rugby, as its new to them as well.

The stark difference between the culture of sport in Australia and in India, is that in Australia, everyone is encouraged to play any sport. There is always an opportunity to play any sport. In India, its basically cricket or its nothing.

Australia do extremely well in cricket, when you consider, most Australians, dont care at all about cricket from February to October every year.

In fact if you did a poll in Australia, would you prefer your team winning the AFL or Rugby title, it would come first, then cricket.

Its interesting to see that despite cricket being the 3rd or 4th sport in Aus, the team following and the value of the Ashes is still high. And that is with other sports available for people to be interested in.

The only thing happening in india is that all rich businesses are replicating the model of IPL and forming pro leagues for football, hockey, badminton etc but has that changed the fortune of the indian football or hockey team? Nope because its sole aim is to make money for the owners. The Gov has to ensure a corrupt free process money being spent on nurturing other sports, so parents see the value of deciding to let their kids concentrate on sport. This obsession with cricket and making these overpaid prima donnas into Gods has to STOP

Don't really care about cricket, I like it when India wins and India winning at the Gabba was awesome, but cricket is played by a handful of countries, so no big deal.

Wrong comparison.

If India wins FIFA world cup hypothetically..  Nation would explode.  There will be road shows & endless coverage on Int'l media & Indian media would go bonkers as well..  Including hyper padosis.

More apt comparison is India winning hockey world cup & nobody in the country cares too much.  Although beating teams like Australia Netherlands in World cups is a big deal.

I think one person of Indian heritage played AFL and he was a champion of the game he played for the West Coast Eagles, his father was born in Kolkata and moved to Australia when he was very young I think.

Like I said kids from a very young age encouraged to play different sports, even arts like dance etc and if they are good or show some interest in it then they are encouraged and supported.

Australia does very well at almost every sport, just look at the Olympics as an example and compare that with India, I think it has a lot to do with being outdoors, quality of life, fresh clean air etc, I could be wrong.

Australian love the outdoors and are lucky they live in a beautiful country as well.

So how can the govt insure a corrupt free system? When corruption is in India's DNA? When the govt is corrupt, a fish rots from the top.

Like I said I used to be one of these Indians who would beat their chest about how wonderful, awesome, amazing, beautiful India was,, then I decided to travel, and never looked back to India. Love Australia, love the people, the culture, the laid back attitude, you can actually see your tax dollars at work in Australia, glad I call Australia home now, of course I will love India, I was born there but other than that don't see myself wanting to go back.
