Honestly, Pant, too.  He plays some off-balance shots, but has also shown the ability to stick around and wait for the right ones to hit.

I think in this game he knew he wouldnt survive by blocking so went for this approach

Maybe it was a team plan once Pujara went.I say that as Rahane and Ashwin were also playing shots

Do we have readymade alround batsmen available? No, none, nada. We either have plodders like Vihari, Abhimanyu or smashers like Shaw. Gill is the only one who has the ability and skill to do both but can he adjusts temperamentally and improve?

Gill and Sundar can come close after playing 12 to 18 months of test cricket.

thanks to Steyn ...at least he spoke a bit  against this  'failure'  unlike several ex Indian players. If  Pujara  is to be maintained in the team any way, the best is to make him open. Ask him to block ball after  ball. Even if his score is 0(120 balls) it still won't be a problem then because the following batsmen can play with far more confidence..

Do we have a replacement for him? Will a dasher work ,not sure. Mayank and Rahul arent that good either..maybe give Shaw another chance.

Ideally a dasher won't work in England at no 3 but a combination of good defence & shot making ability can.  Sundar is well suited for that role.

Rahul & Mayank have solid stroke making ability but they need to be tried at no 6 spot of Jadeja..  I think.   As batsman both of them have higher ceiling than Vihari & Jadeja..  And can change the course of the game & they know how to bat with Tail which Jadeja & Vihari can't.

Ideal XI

Rohit

Gill

Sundar

Kohli

Rahane

Pant

Mayank/Rahul

Ashwin

Shardul/Bumrah

Siraj

Shami

Even that is a problem at the end of the day a batsman has to score runs. He is a batsman not a nightwatchman.  We play 5 specialist bat and if one of them doesnt score then whats the point. Let vihari do this job as he did in australia atleast he has more strokes. Pujara selection shud depend on how quickly he works out his errors, unless he does no point.

GIll should bat at 3. India probably bring back KL Rahul. One last chance.

He hasnt played red ball cricket for longest time now, making him open that to in england can be trouble. Better give Easwaran a shot, someone who is without baggage of failure n opposition has no idea about him. He is someone who grinds it out which is important in england

went a bit OTT ..... that's it ..... fed up of this  'certified failure' . As i earlier said , the moment i found his name at first down  when the team was announced , I  told to myself  ...'the result is  decided ... no need of even   playing now' ... I am not joking  ...

Just 5 months back, the same 'certified failure' was taking blows on his body to bat for hours and tire Pat Cummins helping us to a series win in Australia. But then public memory is short. He failed at WTC, it doesn't make him any lesser player. He'll forever be knows as the guy who won us a series in Australia and played a key role in our biggest ever test series win.

He took body blows coz he wasn't comfortable against Pull & short stuff.  Same Pujara was using cut & pull effectively in Aus in 2018-19.   They also tried short stuff against Gill but he played his shots to perfection.  There is no shame in admitting he is past it like Dhoni was in World cup.

Rahul should have been in Srilanka then touring with the white ball team rather than wasting his time in Eng.

Why would Kohli allow Rahul (or any other young player) to become another competitor for white ball captaincy like Rohit? Whole reason why Dhawan is the captain and Bhuvi the vice captain for SL is they pose no threat to clown's captaincy irrespective of how the team performs.

Thats unfair. Go back to that match thread and commentary. He was being undone by uneven bounce. There is a reason why that grit and determination was hailed.

Yes, he has failed in 5 back to back tests after that and his place is under scrutiny for all the right reasons But irrespective of what happens, he was and will never be a certified failure.

when rookies like Gill & Pant were  scoring rapidly, when Sundar & Thakur were playing back to the wall inns, this senior player was struggling to put bat to ball,That is why he had to cope with so many body blows. I agreed he played his part.... but  that is it ..... nothing less nothing more...

Pujara said in an interview that he simply was hell bent on not getting out & staying the whole day in that Aus test. He simply eliminated most of his scoring options willingly & kept using the body for that purpose. Gill,Pujara & Pant all 3 played masterclasses in their own ways in that match. I think he bats the best alongside Pant.

Also, what is Shastri & the batting coach doing by not helping in sorting out the issues with Pujara's batting?
