Its clear che jinx and virat need to step up more.

 

But its like you expect the class topper to deliver more than being just average.

 

Pant has got starts so far in this tour. Its only 3 innings which is a low sample size. But across the remaining 3 tests i expect one big innings.

here is an Indian WK  averaging 40+  despite being <25 of age and winning matches and series  with crucial blazing inns  even in SENA. And he is improving his keeping as well  Indian cricket witnessing such a scenario  for the first time. So Pant is the least of the problems

If this is any indication, he should be batting higher, probably at no 4 or no 5

Gilchrist always considered his runs as bonus for his team. That is how Pant should be treated. He has all the ingredients to keep getting better and better.

Playing with tailenders by shielding them from strike as much as possible when India is in a spot. 

Right now he takes too much risk & tries to hit almost every ball the moment last so called recognized batsman gets out.

No. 4 or 5 on top of keeping for around 100 overs is too much burden in the modern game. Yes, Andy Flower did it and did it brilliantly (a true ATG), but Zim played few matches compared to today. Let him be at No. 6 and improve and then over time he might move to No. 5

Since his comeback in the MCG test, Pant has come into bat in nearly every test match where we were in a spot. That's 10 back to back tests now. He already has scores of 87, 97, 91, 58* , 101. Expecting him to keep doing this in each match is unreal.

 

The guy is still in his first year post return. Expecting him to change his approach which has given us such turnarounds is not appropriate

 My point was when playing with tailenders . An apt example would be WTC where little caution and dragging the match with tail enders a bit longer would have helped in draw .  When he comes at 6 , mostly he will have one lower bowling all rounder and our real tail . That will not do justice to his capability as he just goes berserk in such  situations . If he made to play at #6 , then we need to have at least 2 capable players at 7 & 8 like a Jaddu /Sundar /Shardul.

Still feel India would do well if he comes at #5, it brings a leftie in the MO instead of all righties and it gives him more space to play a longer impactful innings by choosing to attack when he wants . For another 2-3 years playing at #5 think it should be manageable as he is 23-24.

 

Many of the above mentioned knocks have come  batting not with real tail.  

In Sydney -  When he got out he had Pujara at the other end  & Vihari, Jaddu , Ash yet to come . 

In Gabba -  Again he had Sundar & Shardul 

In Chennai 1 st Test - He had  Sundar & Ash

In  4th Test - He had  Sundar & Axar 

 

These also show may be he is best utilised at #5.
