India need more from Pant

Firstly let me say he is not doing badly.

His keeping is good. He is contributing runs.

But from a gun player I expect him to score one landmark inning in the remaining 3 tests (potentially 6 innings).

Would that be a fair expectation from Pant? or am I labouring a young player with too much expectation.

Well Pant has not set the stage on fire but as a Wicket keeper batsman he has been good.  Playing consistent cameos after the middle order failing is a good performance.

Big knock coming in Leeds or Oval I think.

Fair point but coming to the situations in his last 4 tests:

He blew england in the last home test

in wtc he was left with no partners in second innings and had to hit out and play extravagant shots

in Trentbridge he made 25 of 20  then got out when ball suddenly stopped

in lords both innings he shouod have played much better..

so yes in balance last 5 innings have not been up to mark.. he has been getting out at wrong times.. wtc if he would have stayed for 30 more balls india would have drawn the test..

He is performing well without incident in wicketkeeping.

His confidence will grow, he needs to be nurtured.

It would help if Kohli, Pujara and Rahane actually scored runs and then placed pressure on the bowlers when Pant comes in. I also think he comes in too late, I would have him ahead of Rahane.

Its a fair expectation. And I believe he'll have one memorable innings atleast in the series.

Keeping's been fine.

Maybe move him ahead of Rahane, will also help with scoring rate

Even Gichrist wasn't consistent in England, Pant will score at Oval.

His style of batting doesn't really suit these conditions.

Most of his runs will be scored in the last two tests.

Middle order needs to do more, Pujara and Rahane should be dropped Kohli needs to buckle up too.

This match didn't have typical English conditions, he was set for a big score in first innings. He didn't attack Ali enough, instead went against wood which didn't work

Correct.

The difference between him and Kohli/Pujara/Rahane is that one memorable innings is potentially match/series winning, I also think he will deliver.

Also if anyone criticizes him I will boot them from India to Australia and back to India then to Afghanistan for the Taliban.

Pant is our 4th highest run scorer this series.

What he needs to do is do what he did in Australia a few years back, when the fielders are all on the ropes, take the ones and twos.

Build an innings of 1s,2s. Dont go for the big shots.

Thats fine, he can easily score 3-4 an over doing that.

One the reasons Gilchrist was so great was that Australia had an awesome top order batting line up.

By the time the bowlers got to him, they were exhausted.

Gilchrist in his prime was lethal in many, many innings.

Pant' can be selective. But his inconsistency can somewhat be related to unreliable tail.  He also has to improve his game when the right arm seamer bowls over the wicket and slants it across.  He plays the shot well. At times he misjudges the bounce and feathers one.

Let him be.

He already has 700 runs in the calendar year. Before the year runs out, he could very well end with 1000+ runs. Only two keeper-batsman have done that in test history - Bairstow and Andy Flower.

Max Gilly achieved in a year was 870 runs , Sanga 891, AB 990.

Should he aim to do better? Of course. But can't criticise him for not doing enough after a couple of average performances when almost all of his runs this year are being scored with the te under immense pressure.

Pant has loads of batting talent and no obvious weakness against swing/spin/bounce. If he is not scoring at an average of 50+, it is down to shot selection. At the very least, he shouldn't get out defending to 5th ball line. I don't mind him getting out to Wood in the 1st innings swinging hard. Over time, he will realize it is probably easier taking down a Curran than Wood. What is impressive is that he seems to be learning - showed it against Lyon and now against Anderson. As long he keeps getting better at shot selection and which bowlers to go after and when, no issues with Pant at all. He is our long-term bet.

Yes since they are playing 5 batsmen, he needs to do more but the problem is most of the times he is batting with tail and it is very difficult for anyone to consistently do well in these scenarios.

He didn't get out to 5th ball line. Ball was pitched on middle stump that he edged. Pant has glaring technical weakness as he barely moves his front foot.

Delivered from wide of the crease, pitched on off-stump line, it would have hit 5th stump if left alone. Pant is actually a good leaver. Whether he leaves or plays the ball, his front foot moves well. Absolutely no issues with that.

He was caught in two minds in that last innings as he wanted to attack but seemed to have a cluttered thought process. How often to go after, which balls of the over, field placing, whether he can go for a single 3rd/4th ball. Rotate strike if Ishant seems to be defending well.. just too many thoughts and he seemed to play an in-between nothing shot in the end. That might have given you the impression that his front foot didn't move but that isn't an issue with Pant for now.
