I think because Coach/mentor/ selector these are official administrative positions. Being captain of a playing X1 isn’t no matter how much influence on has on things.

A mentor for grown up players seems like overkill. If a chilled out person like Rohit were captaining the side, there wouldn't be a need for a mentor at all.

IPl is fine as he is under contract but why waste time on a pointless mentor role when his services are needed on the border with the whole Taliban issue, China problem etc or even internal security with potential covid waves
