Ashwin, like Jadeja, is not a wicket-taker. Both are more focused on the economy than wickets,” - Sanjay Manjrekar

Irony being that taking wickets is the easiest surefire way of reducing a run rate.

India's bowling line up lacks bowlers who are bona fide wicket takers.

This is not true. In t20 you have only 20 overs, so wickets falling dont matter. Particularly for teams like pakistan, australia etc who ant deep. Just because india plays in a cowardly fashion doesnt mean other teams wont keep going.

Tbh to be a wicket taker you need to bowl wicket taking lengths. Bumrah is very well capable of doing that, and did so at MI but he had bowlers like Boult, Coulter Nile, etc. For support so he didn’t have to worry about bleeding runs. Our best bet atm to take wickets are Ashwin and Thakur, idiot Kohli didn’t play either in the first game

Bullshit.

Wickets falling matters in the context that I raised.

Its true, they showed the statistics of this being a valid argument during the T20 world cup.

  • Eco shud never be a problem in t20, u maintain one others will get wkt if not u
  • Bhuvi n ash are wkt takers in t20 just they dnt pick in bunch which someone like chahar does but he is boom or bust , shami takes but it comes at a cost of huge eco
  • Jadeja and ashwin cant be put in same bracket as jaddu lacks t20 skills as bowler
  • also btw bumrah s/r is 18.5 and ash 19.7 in t20

All of a sudden India looking like worst bowling side in the tournament, no wicket taker at all it seems

Our LOI bowling has been a problem since KulCha's decline in mid-2019. Batting was covering the issues so far.

I can't remember the last time we defended a 155-160 (or lower) kind of total in T20Is.

They were till about 2016-17. Regressed massively since then. Content with defensive bowling in IPL as well as T20Is. Check their T20 stats in last 3-4 years, that SR could well be around 30

The only T20 cricket Ashwin has played in the last 3-4 years is IPL. Was poor this season (7 wickets@47, ER of 7.4, SR of 39) and at best average in other years.

He may still turn around his T20 bowling if picked in the 11, but I'll not hold much hope.

IPL 2020 and 2021: 20 wickets@37, ER of 7.6, SR of 29

Not good enough. Did okay in a couple of games, but that's about it

did u notice any reasons ?? did u notice why did well last yr and not this yr.

Notice those things not numbers , IPL numbers are irrelevant..........u shud see skills more then the numbers

IPL numbers become important because that is the only place he's played T20s. Skills need to result in numbers (performance and results) else it's of no use.

watching blank numbers of IPL has been one of the reasons why format selections are so wrong

  • PPl will see wkts of shami and think he has improvement rather looking at reason why wkts are coming
  • same jaddu case
  • even thakur case hasnt been understood by many
  • dhawan to 3 saal bluff kiya

and then when opposite happens everyone is shock, well u havent been observing carefully

no they aint , coz everyone play different roles. Dhawan has been a beast in IPL in last few yrs and jaddu a top all rounder but but but
observe diff of ash in last n this yr bowling answer lies their

Manjrekar is spot on w .r.t Jadeja ..... he is more suitable to  longer formats especially in batting where he can take his time, settle and then cut loose... Slogging at once   and  wicket taking  in mere 4 overs is not his cup of tea. And hence he is least suited to T20s when compared to longer formats. but to realize these even after these much  years of time let alone  at the start itself , a captain of minimum sense is required....

I have seen India team win a test series after 36 AO. Lets not get carried away by loss in a t20 game against a mediocre side.

If this was a bilateral series where we lost the first T20I, I don't think the same amount of pessimism would have been there as we know we have this customary practice to lose the first match of a series.

However, when we look at the next opponent, NZ, people are not sure as this is our nemesis in T20 WC. Can't blame fans for the negativity, but there is always going to be a turnaround at some point. Hope its tomorrow.

One thing I have seen with Khaleel the zaleel is he may get tonked in the death but does have a knack of picking up early wickets.  Our selectors gave up way too early on him.  He had the skill to partner Bumrah in LOIs..  Now we are stuck with TTFs like Bhuvi Shami
