SK_IH Posted October 30, 2021 Posted October 30, 2021 Another quote from the article: “The big concern for me is India’s bowling. I know there is merit in the thought that you must back your players after their failures, especially in T20s, but this is easier to do when you are playing a long season of the IPL and not when a couple of defeats mean all chances of winning the World Cup are down the drain,” Source : https://thecricketlounge.com/2021/10/sanjay-manjrekar-once-again-attacked-ashwin-and-jadeja-with-his-bold-statement/
vvvslaxman Posted October 30, 2021 Posted October 30, 2021 Ashwin is opposite of that. He probably may not be successful. That doesn't mean he is focusing on economy. Ashwin doesn't dart like Jaddu. Manju's analysis is based on personal opinion. His twitter spat with both players influences his thinking. If Varun indulges in a twitter spat with him he will have a go at him. Ashwin was picked as a replacement of Sundar. Someone who can bowl inside poweplay. Look how many Afghan spinners bowled inside powerplay. How many of such overs can be bowled by our spinners? Neither Rahul chahar nor Jaddu are powerplay bowlers. Varun has just started bowling. Sunil_narine024 1
ShoonyaSifar Posted October 30, 2021 Posted October 30, 2021 He is absolutely right this time. Bhuvi, Ashwin, Jadeja are all defensive bowlers. Even Bumrah isn't much of a wicket taker in T20Is. New guy 1

ShoonyaSifar Posted October 30, 2021 Posted October 30, 2021 He is absolutely right this time. Bhuvi, Ashwin, Jadeja are all defensive bowlers and their T20 stats reflect that. Ashwin becomes an attacking T20 bowker only on turning tracks, which we hardly see these days. Even Bumrah isn't much of a wicket taker in T20Is. Our T20I bowling was at its best when we had KulCha for a 14-15 months period after the 2017 CT attacking in the middle overs and picking loads of wickets. But both were not managed properly and regressed. New guy, adi B and Bigg Brother 3

Two of your main bowlers bowling in middle overs and not looking to take wickets means team get to set a base and can easily score 65-70 runs off last 5-6 overs. Plus none of our other bowlers take wickets in T20Is either. Also by economical, Ashwin and Jadeja go at nearly 7 RPO, you would rather have a bowler take 2/35 than 0/28 or even 0/25 speedheat 1

Rashids economy looks better cause he plays associates. You want to crib about our bowling please do but in a 120 ball over if all 5 go at 7 economy even without taking wicket, ill take it in day in day out.

Even if you take wicket every 3rd over you are still left with few hard hitting batters for last 2-3 overs. Sure its nice to get wickets but ill take avg econ of 7 from bowling unit any day. RajBan Posted October 30, 2021 Posted October 30, 2021 I think its a combination of not selecting right players (eg Deepak Chahar, Siraj ahead of Bhuvi/Shami) plus those who have been selected are completely out of gas or mentally least bothered after a demanding IPL(Bumrah/Jadeja).

sandeep Posted October 30, 2021 Posted October 30, 2021 Folks are overreacting left right and center. Wickets in T20 are largely a function of pressure. The format, along with scoreboard pressure, or game situation pressure, keeps forcing batsmen to take risk which leads to wickets. If the bowlers have a sub-par total on the board, and conditions lopsided in batsmen's favor with dew, of course its going to be hard to take wickets. Not defending the ordinary lackluster bowling in Game 1, but context matters. Same bowling lineup would have likely won the game if 180 was on the board. I know it sounds far-fetched but think about it. Adi_91, Indwin, Lord and 2 others 1 4
vvvslaxman Posted October 30, 2021 Posted October 30, 2021 (edited) Strike rate of Indian spinners (min 10 wickets) Kuldeep is a beast in wicket taking. We discarded him without giving a proper run. He was part of Srilankan tour. He was okay there. With more opportunities he has a second shot. We have to wait and see how good he will be after surgery. About Ashwin, he has one of the best ER/SR combination. Unlike others often times he opened the bowling. Chahal was good. But he can be expensive. You can say the same about Mishra. Another great wicket taker. Too bad he played only 10 matches for us. Last Ashwin played for India was in 2017. Ashwin has come a long way since. He uses IPL for experiments. His strike rate probably took a dip not because he decided to become defensive. He became less effective. That's it. Edited October 30, 2021 by vvvslaxman
