What a dumb WC format.

It was always going to be a scheduling problem when you gotta accomodate minnows.

It was going to be a mess either ways.

Look at the T20I rankings.

POS TEAM MATCHES POINTS RATING
1 England 32 8,944 280
2  Pakistan 38 10,067 265
3  India 32 8,430 263
4  New Zealand 32 8,254 258
5  South Africa 34 8,528 251
6  Australia 38 9,272 244
7  Afghanistan 16 3,743 234
8  Bangladesh 34 7,888 232
9  Sri Lanka 30 6,951 232
10  West Indies 34 7,680 226

Make tournament short but still have good chance for the deserving teams to win but lot of associate participation.

Make it 4 groups of 4 with 16 teams. 2 Testplaying nations +2 associates.

1. Ensures that the top two teams go through. More moolah for ICC.

2. Have quarter finals - choose the grouping based on points/win/NRR or whatever and not pre tournament seeding. Gives meaning to group matches.

3. Semis also based on overall performance ...1st ranking vs. fourth and second vs. third.

4. Final.

Ensures India will go uptil quarters for sure and then if they lose, cant help them.

It has more to do with group division. There is only one minnow-Bangladesh in other group, even that is test playing nation.. While we had Afghanistan,Scotland,Nambia. Pakistan is other mini-minnow team. One of the associate team should have been other group with SA/Australia in Our group.

You can't put teams on your whims and fancies. Qualifying teams got the groups according to their performance in qualifiers

This just shows the importance of scoring fast and NRR in t20s. Teams which don't realize that will always get left behind

Old fashioned cricket doesnt win you t20s, scoring safely or trying to tie down teams in bowling doesnt work

Only 2 things work, smashing bslls and going for NRR, and smashing stumps to stop runs, england is doing the former and pakistan the later

South africa lost semi final race the day they decided to bat conservatively against bangladesh chasing just 84 and took 14 overs to do so. They have no one else to blame

A t20 tournament which favors agressive teams is exactly the right approach, this is what t20s are for, not for stats padding and averages.  I guess our fans have the kl rahul ementality of averages/points over strike rate/NRR

India has zero excuse not to make it to next round. Ever since IPL was started India is yet to win a world T20. But strangely IPL has helped us improve in Tests. Bumrah probably would have been a miss. Even Ashwin/Jadeja in Tests.

no they were good in FC too.

IPL was supposed to help us in WT20s but no results

It's not the format but the scheduling in our group that sucked.

India Pak and NZ should have faced minnows at the start and then faced each other in the letter half. But the scheduling was done the other way.

Two games into the tournament and the team with the biggest fan base is practically out.. similar to WC2007

IPL is the best format. Each team playing each other twice. The best 2 teams get a 2nd chance. The 3rd and 4th get eliminated to see that any flukes are taken care of and another shot to prove there was no fluke.

Personally they should add a best of 3 final as well.

Obviously not feasible in a wc but wc is always a lottery unless the gulf between a team and its competition is way to large like Wi and Aus great teams.

IPL is a league and hence gives that many matches for every team. We cannot have WC of 12 teams to go through that as it will take a large amount of time. It is not that profitable for the organizers too.

The format is not that bad but the grouping and scheduling sucked big time.

There must be realistically one more strong team in the group that could beat NZ and Pak more often than not. That's how you don't know what happens.

What we were left with is effectively one round-robin among Nz, Pak and India and all three of these teams minnow bashing the rest.

for what it’s worth India might end up with the best NRR in the tournament :giggle:
