You can blame him for lack of awareness. He should have checked whether there was any fielder before playing that shot.  Against a seamer that is tad risky no matter how slow he is.

I hope players are encouraged to take such risks and show their 'lack of awareness".

Wade showed the importance of innovation. We hardy have any players who can improvise. Courageous on Venky's part. Was a calculated risk that didn't come off. It happens.

Blame him?  That's a split-second judgement call of shot selection based on the game situation.  Fact of the matter is that he attempted a shot that was a very decent choice for the delivery that he faced.  For any sort of reverse-scoop, batsmen need to pre-meditate a bit - and the fact that he expected the ball to to fit that shot is good.  The bowler did a good job executing the delivery by bowling it slow enough, and wide enough, to induce the execution error.  One that could have just as easily bounced away for 4.

So if you are claiming that blame is for Shot selection, I would strongly dispute that.  Shot selection was pretty good.  T20 batting is not the same as old school ODI batting.  So the shot selection metric, the risk=reward ratio are markedly different.  You can't 'blame' a batsman for attempting a shot just because a fielder was in the vicinity.  Batsmen have to back themselves and go for shots that carry a bit of risk.  That's the ballgame.

Why didn't he bowl? Another useless bilateral match for the bilateral kings.

yeah, agree.  Should have been given an over at least.

Maybe Dravid went the sentimental route with giving Chahar the opportunity since he's from Rajasthan.  Dont know.

Not blame him. Sorry for not finishing the sentence.  He didn't look out of place. He looked the part except that one small minor issue.

He looked calm and collected even while executing that shot. He almost got it.

what issue?

Awareness.  He has a clean striking ability infront of the wicket. Playing a low percentage reverse scoop without  knowing there is a fielder stationed is the issue i am talking about.

yeah lets agree to disagree on that - scoops are not low percentage shots anymore in today's cricket.  And neither does fielder presence dictate shot selection in today's T20 batting as it did in ODI batting 10 years ago.

Scoop is less riskier than reverse scoop do you agree? That too against a seamer.

I can only agree with Venkatesh shot selection - given his proven results and resume, he backed the shot that he felt comfortable with.  And came very close to getting it right.  It was a risky shot, and the bowler's execution was slightly better than the batsman's.  That happens sometimes.  Doesn't mean that the shot selection was to blame.

But we can agree to disagree.  This is a subjective thing.

a 2-ball sample is ridiculously low. I hope he gets to play for longer periods.

Yes. He should have come ahead of the other Iyer. Shreyas Iyer is good only when there is an early collapse. He can bide his time and pick up the pace. He is never good at going right of the bat.

Once a player is actually selected, he must be given sufficient time to succeed.

This is the key !  Being patient with newbies.

But playing him out of position and manufacturing a defined role for him is not fair, he's a top order batsman who is good against pace and plays with intent, his bowling is useful but unlike others he seemed to be a thinking bowler, pace wise decent for someone who has not bowled much, we did the same with Shankar, pushed him to bat in the top 4 in odis and t20s and it never worked, will have come in terms with the fact that Hardik is still the best all rounder in the country, management and selectors need to ensure he bowls over 80 overs in the coming first class season, keeping him away from odi and t20 cricket for the time being.

Agree strongly !

This tendency of big stars batting in the top 3 in white ball cricket has prevented us from reaching our true potential.

Dhoni, Yuvi and Kapil before that were the only exceptions ... and it is in their hey days that we won our three World Cups.

Venky Iyer should open the innings in T20Is.
