SA team - There is still ample potential

Its been a while since I saw a cricket match with SA team. I am actually quite impressed with quality of talent they are producing. 

 

1) Markram and Elgar are steady hand. 

2) Pietersen looks class with great technique. He is very new at this level. He will get better with time.

3) De Cock offers steady Batting and Wicket keeping option 

4) Muller is a handy all rounder. Decent medium pace bowler with batting potential

5) Bavuma is class. Technique and courage.

6) Jansen looks super talent left armer with a fairly good batting technique 

7) Olivier is still not playing. He is probably the best fast bowler after Rabada.

8) Maharaj is decent spin option

9) And Rabada ofcourse

10) Nortje also who is not playing, is probably quickest of the lot

 

They seem to be just one or two batsman short of being really good team.

I think its a new group which will take time to really hit their strides. Olivier was a big miss this match as he also brings in experience which I thought was lacking on the first day.

I think they will rebuild quickly.  Obviously quite a talented group.  They tour Kiwis next & haven't lost a series there.  I expect something special from these guys in Kiwi land.  Jansen Nortje Rabada Olivier would be killer on those tracks..  Kiwis will not risk green mambas for sure lol

Issue is consistency. They even played well against pakistan and were in drivers seat in first test. Then fawad started playing his shots and they lost the plot and test. That’s where they needed someone like kallis or ab. I remember india lost the 2018 series not to saf but to AB. India were in good position in both tests even after losing toss till ab played two of his best sub 100 innings ever and both against india.. against weaker teams they ll win but against top 4 if they cant win key moments they ll struggle.

They never seem To want for talent. A bunch of the kolpaks are returning but the feeling is that they are old and not that good that it is worth putting talented guys development on the back burner. Petersen looks a good player and I had a good first impression of zubayr Hamza too.

They need another spinner as an alternative to Maharaj, who is pretty decent himself on helpful wickets, to compete in Asia.

 

Otherwise, a raw but potentially very good group of players.

I like this Alviro guy. He looks a bit like Mahela Jayawardene. His technique is reasonably sound. He got sucker punched by Siraj beauty. Otherwise looks very organized.

Yeah, that one 50 averaging batsman always ensures that atleast at home, this team is competent enough and hard to be beaten.

there have a lot of "potential", but lack consistency and grit. moreover, their batting has genuinely declined: think about the days with Graeme Smith (>> Elgar/Markram), Kallis, Amla, ABDV >> everyone currently around. bowling is still impressive.

At home not much difference between current batsmen and past greats.. You will be surprised to see their averages at home to be of a similar range.

Their best four batsman Markram, Elgar, RVD & De kock averages around 38/39 (that too with most likely minnow bashing) & Bavuma averages 33.

 

Elgar is almost 35 and might retire in year or so.

De kock already retired since the thread was made.

RVD is almost 33 & Bavuma 32

 

If anything i see SA declining even more in future if they can't find some talent quickly. Just having good bowling won't win them match against good sides.

No the past greats did have better avg at home, but some of them had much better avg away like SRT, SMG & Dravid from our side. SA tracks are easily the most "sporting" in the world, in the age of DRS though everyone's home avg have takes a beating with the exception of Oz to an extent mainly because they beat the poor pommies black & blue at home over 5 tests each 3/4 year cycle

Senuran Muthusamy is an option , he played a test match in India for South Africa

The middle order, the bowling and poise of young players in international cricket was nothing short of incredible. And this was without De Kock.

 

Great future ahead if they can retain this group
