Austin 3:!6 Posted December 31, 2021 Posted December 31, 2021 First of all let me clarify that I am a fan of Rohit and a huge admirer of what he has done for Mumbai Indians. He has also led India brilliantly for the limited opportunities he got (Asia Cup, Nidahas etc.). Infact he was a great captain that India never had. But he is 34 now and as per reports he wont be fit for SA ODI series. By the time world cup 2023 starts he would be approaching 37. So considering his age and fitness was it wise to appoint him as the captain? Or it would have been better to select a young captain and let Rohit enjoy his batting for whatever cricket he has left in him. Sunil_narine024 and Vijy 1 1
Something Posted December 31, 2021 Posted December 31, 2021 Captainship is important but overhyped in India. It should always be about picking the best 11 within India. If the Captain isn't making the cut, put that hat on someone else's head who is. I've stated this before - There is no data that definitively shows that having a captain for 5-6 year stretch makes the team better. It feels more like semantics. That said, I think Rohit should have been white ball captain few years ago. He seems like a good tactician. Chakdephatte and Austin 3:!6 2
Chakdephatte Posted December 31, 2021 Posted December 31, 2021 Desperate attempt. Rohit won 5 IPLs, Kohli none. So let's make Rohit captain. In reality, it will put more pressure on Rohit Sharma. He has to win two ICC titles in two years but with the same core team. If he doesn't win one, he will be declared a failure. Austin 3:!6 and Sunil_narine024 1 1
New guy Posted December 31, 2021 Posted December 31, 2021 His time is past. Also he is not going to have much if a carerr unless he drastically improves his fitness Austin 3:!6, Vijy and Sunil_narine024 1 2
Lord Posted December 31, 2021 Posted December 31, 2021 No. He himself was one of big reasons of us not winning ICC tourneys, having choked in almost all knockouts/must win games except v BD Needed a young captain without the baggage Austin 3:!6 and putrevus 1 1

I don't think Pant is good player in shorter formats as of yet.He should have been made VC for test squad and future captain there.Rahul should be WK in shorter formats IMO he adds that balance. Dhoni was an excellent white ball player before he became the captain.

But then Pant shouldnt play. Dhoni had no captaincy experience at any level. And he was made T20 captain ahead of even better(then) white ball player Yuvraj.

Don't need to have any captaincy experience to become captain. But Dhoni unlike Yuvraj was certain starter in all formats when he was made whiteball captain.Pant is not a certain starter in whiteball cricket.

Yuvraj wasnt a certain starter? He was in prime form. Even did well in 2007 ODI WC where Dhoni sucked. Pant is a certain starter as per our selectors. They don't differentiate between formats.Else he wouldnt have come back in ODI team after Aus tour.
vvvslaxman Posted December 31, 2021 Posted December 31, 2021 Focus was more on removing Kohli from captaincy than giving captaincy to Rohit. They gave it to the next most reasonable choice to soften the blow. Eventually captaincy will change hands again. For now Kohli's one-dimensional captaincy style in LOI is not getting us anywhere. Poor team building, strategies, poor resource handling. Hopes of winning a title under kohli has receded to a point of no return. For now Rohit is the best option. Rohit can create a template and leave it to the next captain. I don't say he is a wizard. But he is way more practical. Also better in man management. sorak and velu 2

Dhoni became the ODI captain after nearly 3 years of playing ODIs (and tests),had played 75+ ODIs. Pant became a certainty across formats only this year

Doesnt help we try so few youngsters and dont back them enough
Sean Bradley Posted December 31, 2021 Posted December 31, 2021 His experience as Mumbai Indians captain will be handy, above all he has a Knack of winning trophies which is a major upgrade over hard-luck Kohli. Norman 1
Vijy Posted December 31, 2021 Posted December 31, 2021 his fitness is very suspect. I doubt if he'll even be fit for the big tourneys. I'd rather have seen a younger/fitter captain, but I can also see the selectors' reasoning Chakdephatte 1

I just want him to win the World Cup. I don't care if we get knocked out in the next World T20 as well. I have that patience, unfortunately most Indian fans don't have it. But the extra pressure is because if we fail to win the World T20, people will be quick enough to point out how Kohli was removed for this man (weak memory).
