Why don't Bairstow and Buttler play their natural game more often in test cricket?

They don't score much anyway.

It seems they would do better by playing their attacking game. They can put opposition on backfoot if they manage to rattle the bowlers.

Buttler has once played 300 balls against neighbors. In first test this series, he grinded it out as well. He has played good slow innings many a times. So, in his case it's not about natural game. He has a mental block in tests.

The correct assumption is whatever way they play, they can't score runs consistently.

Not in Barstow's case. He doesn't have the technique to stay. He played best when he attacked.

His top 8 innings read-

167(251), 150(191), 140(183), 119(215), 110(186), 103(140), 101(170), 99(145).

He never played grinding knocks like Buttler played last match.

Yup. If they had the skill, they wouldn't have such poor test records. The most remarkable transformation I have seen from LOI to tests is Rohit. His success came after switching to opening in tests. Maybe Buttler and Bairstow could try the same.

Yes, his defense is very weak. He is better when attacking. But the inconsistency shows that this is what he will give when he attacks. 1 or 2 good inning in 10 matches.

check the bashing that Pant is getting. Everyone accepts if you do tuk tuk and get out anyway because it 'looks' fine.

The wide ball rules are different for LOI and test cricket.

A good bowler is limited to 10 overs or 4 overs in LOI cricket and the "5"th bowler has to bowl 10 or 4 overs - there is no such restriction in test cricket. The good bowlers can keep bowling.

There are no field setting rules in test cricket of 5 men inside circle or power plays or whatever....

It is not that easy to play a LOI game in test cricket.

Actually the bowling rules totally tilt LOI game in favor of Batsmen.

For example in ODI - an opener like Sachin/Sehwag can play all 50 overs. They are not limited to 60 balls each. However a bowler like  McGrath can only bowl 10 overs.... Why should that be? Why can he not bowl 25 overs if Sachin/Sehwag can bat for all 50?

Handicap for bowlers = tilted in favor of batsmen.

Right now RGS has the best technique among openers, only KL is comparable & arguably superior to him - in terms of temperament though Rohit is still some way ahead. So no just a change of mindset will not help, Buttler/Bairstow don't have the technique IMO to survive tough spells
