Kuldeep Yadav’s gradual return to white ball cricket took a turn for the better as the wrist spinner returned with figures of four for 18 in his match-winning performance against South Africa in India’s third-ODI win in New Delhi.

Yadav, who is returning from a knee injury followed by a hand injury, said that the key to his successful return to white ball cricket would be based on how well he could garner his rhythm back.

“I have worked on my rhythm since returning back from my injury. That is why I could get the pace which I was earlier generating from my hand. So right now, I am not compromising on spin. I am getting good turn,” said Yadav at the post-match press conference.

Yadav ran through the South African middle order, picking up the wickets of Andile Phehlukwayo, Marco Jansen, Imaad Fortuin and Anrich Nortje in 4.1 overs. While he is not a part of India’s plans for the current T20 World Cup to be held in Australia, a successful return to ODIs could spark calls for his selection for the 2023 ODI World Cup squad.

“The World Cup is far away. I am not thinking about it. I have become very practical now with things. I focus on the series I play. I have become experienced now, so I have an idea how to bowl. My aim is to perform well in every series,” Kuldeep said.

Later after the match, R Ashwin uploaded a video on his Youtube channel where he called Yadav one of the best wrist spinners he has ever encountered and explained why he could be such a potent force for India in the longest format of the game.

“I have always felt this about Kuldeep Yadav when we talk about wrist spinners. He has got this amazing feature to bowl the repetitive lengths that are required to do well in the long format.

“He can land in a particular spot whenever he wants, and that’s a fantastic quality for a wrist spinner. That’s a massive value for a wrist spinner,” Ashwin said in the video.

Yadav has started to get some needed international matches under his belt. The spinner has featured in three back-to-back series against West Indies and Zimbabwe and was also a part of the India A series. “Matches are very important for confidence and experience. Sometime you want try something which doesn’t happen at the nets.”

Ashwin is a smart guy. If he were selector he would have backed Kuldeep. Chetan sharma's logics are borderline idiotic.

Their reasoning. They want one spinner from each type. One Masala Dosa, One Rava Dosa,  One plain Dosa. They don't want 3 Rava Dosa.

None of pakistan batsmen will be capable of picking his googly. Check out their record against Shamsi who is inferior version of Kuldeep. 6.92 in 10 matches.

Looking at the masala going around spinners choice i would have rather preferred Jaddu bein fit although i never trusted him in T20.  Atleast we know he will play for sure. There won't be any confusion. He is a better fielder too.

I some times wonder if it has all to do with selectors/ captain/ BCCI etc having vendetta against a player or if some amount of blame lies with the player themselves.

Kuldeep is clearly the next Test spinner in line. Should have played more Tests already. Has a 5fer in Aus.

 

He needs backing at this stage when his game is more developed

If he was not in good books of BCCI it was easy to drop him for good around two months back. But he got chance to play for India A against NZ A then got selected to play for India.

To me it feels that Chahal has massive backing from leadership group of the main squad.

ofcourse at the end it falls on player , in t20 he fell behind due to reasons .  Rohit has been one of his huge supporter so least of all he cant blamed

At the end 15 will be selected so someone will miss out and a lot of reasons get in that

chahal has been going back and taking bundle of wkts in IPL , if you see his IPL record i think hardly 1-2 bad seasons. 

One reasons he has struggled in international is his pace in air which anyways havent been kuldeep strength . But where someone like chahal has gotten ahead is bowling tough overs like PP or death 

For lack of speed in air they then preffered bishnoi (although not taken last min but he was preff)

Yes I think Kuldeep having one bad ipl and then injuries after that, made things worse for him.

However Chahal was mostly preferred over Kuldeep when they played one spinner in 2019WC, although Kuldeep massively outperformed Chahal in most matches when they played together.

Kuly is a generational talent and needs continous backing in all formats ,but we just dont know how to handle talents in the bowling department. 

Ashwin will retire in a couple of years ,kuly should be a regular in the test arena at least

Yadav is 28 next month. Generational talent or not, half his career has already gone. And waiting for Ashwin to retire will mean he is in his 30s - just the right profile for Dravid & Sharma's Retirement Village.

It will be a travesty not backing him for the rest of his career. He is one of a kind. You can find left arm spinner, off spinner even leg spinners. But chinaman one of the rarest skill with already impressive record in all formats? No chance. That 2019 world cup was a sham. Rashid Khan went for 100 runs in one match. Did Afghanistan drop him? Those were flat wickets
