tapandrun Posted December 28, 2022 Posted December 28, 2022 Pak banking too much on Abrar to pick 20 wkts in test. right now their bowling does not show much promise of taking 20 wkts. Right now their best hopes are draws.
sandeep Posted December 28, 2022 Posted December 28, 2022 Shaheen Shah Afridi is lucky that he had to get his Appendix removed, else he too would have joined the trundler brigade. Vijy 1
sandeep Posted December 28, 2022 Posted December 28, 2022 Banter with "rivals" aside, its been clear for many years that Pakistan test team is not in the top tier of test playing countries - they are part of that second tier with Sri lanka, West Indies, Bangladesh. South Africa and New Zealand are also teetering on that edge. NZ is only surviving by importing South African players - learning from their Colony-mata England. Reality of test cricket is that only test teams that have well funded, well managed, competitive domestic FC long-format cricket structures, are going to be competitive at top test cricket. And India, England and Australia are the only ones that meet this requirement. Even Australia can struggle in a few years to keep their pipeline running. Even today, Imagine if Loosebuschange was playing for SA instead of Australia, and its not like Aussies have a train of middle order test calibre batsmen waiting in the wings. Yes, historically, its always been like this with a few teams being really good and the rest being mediocre to poor - but back in those days, test cricket didn't have the threat of loosing top cricket talent to a different format permanently. Today they do. Pakistan with a 200+ million population that supposedly loves cricket, really has made its own mess to find itself in the Zim, SL, Windies, boat. Vijy and Clarke 2

Pakistan aren’t our rivals in test matches. If they ever become our rivals in this format then we should be banned from playing tests, that’s how poor they are. I think some of our northeastern Ranji sides can give them a proper contest in tests, sides like TN, Karnataka, Mumbai, Delhi etc can even beat them Vijy 1
nitinbwj Posted December 28, 2022 Posted December 28, 2022 NZ need to get a lead of 100 and watch the drama unfold.

NZ is fine - they are good at both home-grown talent and importing saffers. perhaps Pak should try its policy of importing Bangers, some of whom are better than their players sandeep 1

Mmhs on pp has done a really good analysis of the state of Pakistani first class cricket going back to the 60s till.today where the talent suddenly seem to have suddenly dried up. Much of that can be owed to the finishing school ie county cricket and since the overseas player rule came in you can see the impact it has had on them quite clearly. Even their 90s batch of cricketers like Wasim, Inzi, Saqlain etc benefitted a lot from it. Probably this also affected WI a lot. Tbh I've read that they've now revamped their fc cricket structure to have more department teams along with the regular ones in 2 div so the general player pool is bigger as someone in their infinite wisdom decided a few yrs ago that 6 teams in the top div would be enough for a country of 200mn people and would infact lead to only the cream of the crop making it in a ruthless filtering process. Lol. Maybe that will improve things somewhat going fwd. Edited December 29, 2022 by rollingstoned
