Jasprit Bumrah's injury appears to be more serious than it initially appeared and he could be out for a longer period than expected. As it stands now, the India spearhead is seriously doubtful for the Indian Premier League (IPL), set to commence in just about a month's time and run in April and May. There is even a possibility that he will not be fit for the World Test Championship (WTC) final in the UK in June, should India qualify.

Sources in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the IPL circles have indicated that Bumrah, out of international action for almost five months, has not been feeling comfortable and he is staring at a potentially long hiatus.

According to sources, the target for the Indian team is to get him ready for the World Cup in October-November, if not necessarily for the Asia Cup, wherever it is held.

Bumrah last played for the country in a T20I against Australia, on September 25 last year and Cricbuzz recently reported that he was not cleared by the National Cricket Academy authorities in Bengaluru for the three ODIs against Australia in March. But the latest information is things have not exactly panned out as planned and the NCA is not going to rush him into action in a hurry.

Initially it was thought that it was not all that bad if Bumrah returned to take part in the IPL as he would be bowling only four overs in a game and the original plan was for him to handle the workload slowly and an IPL return suited the plans.

But now it will take longer and last heard, the managements of the BCCI, the NCA and the Indian team are chalking out a meticulously planned programme for his return.

This seems serious now. He will be out for almost year soon.

Two match winners out. Pant/Bumrah. Unadkat gets a new lease of life with aging Shami.

Unadkat may not be that bad option if he can swing the ball as he can bat too or is he only suited for indian conditions?

many people on ICF sing his praises, but I am not convinced he is int'l class. bowling in the 120s-130s on flatter tracks (which Eng favors for some teams), he can be taken to the cleaners. I would trust him more in SA

I had expected him to recover for IPL, but it must be serious - nearly one year in total. looks like end of boomer is nigh. ditto for pant who may never be the same hereon post-injury

This was expected for bumrah considering his action & stress he had on his back. It's impressive he managed to play all formats + ipl for 5 years. When ever he returns will he put that much pressure on his back or change this style of bowling?

Pant has himself to blame for this.

He is largely an unknown quantity. But he is a tall bowler. He can extract bounce.  He has experience. In current era unlike the era when he made debut we don't really have a technically sound batsmen play. Most of them have glaring technical weaknesses.  Just look at Ishant's career in the beginning and the later phase.

He can do the role of ollie robinson. Ollie robinson hardly does anything other than mixing up.  Couple of full balls, then a short ball,  Then a length ball. He has tremendous success in most places.

WtF. I saw him bowling full tilt to venkatesh Iyer in the nets who was also rehabbing in NCA.

May be one or two overs? Could be a case of waiting for complete recovery.

we can consider both careers as winding down

I wouldnt be surprised if Bumrah calls it quits on International cricket after this year and focuses only on IPL. Dont think bowlers like him with his action and pace are suited to be all format players- although it would be idea for someone like him to be a test specialist but we dont have a right to stop them playing shorter formats so lets just agree that we wont find a test quality pace bowler like him in the foreseeable future and have to rely on turndlers

still he would need more than 6 mnths - IS it?

as if he is not recovering in next 6 months, it indicates it is a dangerous issue and I hope he can come back ...

I hope he decides to play test cricket along with IPL and quits white ball internationals, only way to extend his India career, he shouldn’t try to play all formats from here on.

Looks like this is the second time that injury / pain has recurred after taking time off.

So resting aint helping anymore and the isssue seems chronic.

So what are his options now? Surgery (which has got its own risks) plus change of action? I can’t imagine him not facing a back issue again with that kind of action. He probably has got the one of the worst actions in terms of putting twisting pressure on his back.

He gotta be positive and he’ll come back. But he needs an intervention and not just rest as his treatment plan.

He is nearing 30 now in a year or so.  Will be hard for him.

Perhaps he should try to lengthen the run up.

That short run up was bound to cause stress to the back.

Back injury is a bi**h for a Fast bowler.  Unlikely he will be 100%...  Ever.
