What role will Ashwin play for the rest of the world cup ? Ashwin should be a no-brainer (vs. Shardul ) against SENA teams in knock-out games.

Clutch as what - batsman or bowler ? What is the historical basis of calling him clutch ?

My issue with him is - he is an extremely weak bowler on these flat wickets - and middle order hitters from SENA teams can take 8-10 runs from his lollipop bowling without a lot of risk.

If he is there primarily for his batting and not bowling - then might as well play Kishan or SKY.

He has won more matches for us than Ashwin in Sena.

also has a habit of picking up wickets in bunches in odis too , also averages lesser than Ashwin with the ball in odis.

He is definitely a better batsman than Ashwin in odis.

Lets first give him a proper chance in this world cup.

The WC is not in SENA. Ashwin is in contention only coz of the wickets. Else its easy decision.

His batting has declined but agree hes a better hitter than Ashwin.

If he's playing I'd send him when we need quick runs and don't mind a wicket.

Bottomline is they will be flexible. Ashwin on a slightly turning wicket and bigger grounds. But problem with Thakur is there is no such thing as helpful ground for Thakur in India. Shardul Thakur's Economy in India is 6.39. Strike rate also higher.  His ER against Australia at home 8, Against NZ 6.46,  Against England 6.72. Those are very poor numbers. It is more a hope than reality.

I have opened a thread on this Ashwin..

I have been telling that Ashwin should be played on need basis....

When the pitch supports spin, play him irrespective of the opposition and its not spinning then play shami / thakur

this match shows we need Ashwin ,the ball is turning on most wickets.

What did he do when ball was turning in Chennai?

Consistently playing Thakur ahead of Shami/Ashwin or an extra batsman will likely cost us the WC. Rohit and his yaari dosti

Ashwin was needed vs Pakistan if Shardul was only going to bowl 2. It's a waste of space in the XI.

Hardik has to give 10 at least in crucial matches  or this team will be imbalanced until the end of the tournament.

We'll end up wasting space on a bowler who will neither bowl his quota nor add batting depth to allow the top order to be a little more aggressive

As long as he bowls like Nabi did and doesn't try his  million variations in one over.

That's hindsight. He'd bowled atleast 3 more if Pak lasted full 50 overs.

And that would have been horrible because he would have bowled at the death where's he's absolutely horrible.

Hence, pointless selection

Well in some places where there's swing/bounce he can be handy. Here in Lucknow tonight in fact he could've been useful with the massive boundaries.

In comparison to Ash its not. He's there more to cover when one of main bowlers gets hit/injured which hasn't happened yet but can anyday.

Where would you have bowled ashwin in that match? Biggest partnership in the match was Babar-Rizwan, two right handers. Jadeja built tension by bowling quick economical overs and eventually siraj and kuldeep cashed in on that tension. If ashwin was there, Rohit might have used him and released all the pressure.

This was a spinning pitch and an opponent that doesn't play off spin well. Where else will you play Ash?

Even Netherlands recognised that and brought Aryan friggin Dutt on and had success on a much flatter deck in Hyderabad.
