Rahul Dravid Blames Ahmedabad's Pitch For Cricket World Cup 2023 Final Loss In BCCI's Review Meeting, Says Report

In a comprehensive review meeting held by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), head coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma faced tough questions regarding India's unexpected loss to Australia in the Cricket World Cup 2023 final. The meeting, conducted 11 days after the final, aimed to dissect the reasons behind India's defeat and to plan for the upcoming South Africa tour.

The Post-Mortem Meeting:

The meeting, which took place in New Delhi, saw the participation of BCCI secretary Jay Shah, vice president Rajeev Shukla, and treasurer Ashish Shelar. The officials probed Dravid and Sharma about the factors contributing to India's below-par performance in the critical final clash.

Dravid's Defense: Blaming the Pitch

According to a report in Dainik Jagran, Rahul Dravid attributed the loss to the Ahmedabad pitch at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The head coach argued that the pitch did not exhibit the expected amount of turn, a crucial factor that played a pivotal role in India's inability to strangle the Australian batting lineup.

Ahmedabad's Slow Turn:

The final was played on a used pitch, the same strip employed in the league match against Pakistan. Dravid pointed out that the excessively slow nature of the pitch, combined with the impeccable execution of the Australian bowlers, hindered India's batting prowess. Despite a brisk start by Rohit Sharma, the middle-order struggled to build momentum against the disciplined Australian attack.

Curator's Decision:

The decision to use a used pitch was influenced by the local curator's advice. While fresh pitches are generally advisable for knockout matches, all knockout games in this World Cup were played on used pitches. The pitch was watered less to assist spinners, but it backfired for India, making the surface slow, especially in the first half.

Tactical Errors:

The BCCI officials questioned Dravid about the decision to pursue this plan, especially when India's seamers, led by Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah, had performed admirably throughout the tournament. Dravid defended the strategy, claiming it had worked effectively in previous matches but faltered in the crucial final.

Looking Ahead:

As the majority of the World Cup squad members and support staff enjoy a break from the T20I series against Australia, the focus shifts to the South Africa tour. This series marks the beginning of India's quest for an ICC trophy and will include three T20Is, three ODIs, and two Tests as part of the World Test Championship.

So it looks like the TM decision for a used pitch was what *ed us.

As i said Dravid is fattu, he reached out to curators even in useless biletrals and changes the pitch, remember him and pandya got a curator sacked during t20 series against nz i believe. So this phattu during all those 10 matches thought we won only due to pitch  tampering and not due to our effective bowling. What a sore looser , how come bcci is still extending his contract is beyond imaginable.

So they expected turn from the pitch. But went with just 2 specialist spinners. Sounds illogical. This is not the first time pitch has "backfired" on India agianst Australia. There is no peep about his backing of SKY in ODIs. With Jaddu not doing anything INdia effectively had just 5 basmen in the line up to play out 50 overs. No 6th bowling option.

Assuming the information is correct, he is just exhibiting classic mid-level mgmt CYA tactic. Take the glory, pass the blame.

Whereas real leadership demands deflecting glory and taking the blame.

he piked that pitch knowing our batsmen will not play well on it,he is responsible.

He is under-estimating his own team. That is the problem here. India has won 4 test series in a row. Reached two WTC final. Had impeccable WC record in 2015/2019 unil that knock outs.  Instead of trusting his own inform team he probabl meddled with pitch like he has been doing since he assumed his role as coach. A fresh pitch would have been our best friend.

I want to know what the everlovin’ phuck do any of the three  ‘gentlemen’ know about the cricket to conduct a thorough enquiry?

The first couldn’t hold an opinion unless his papa told him what it is.

The second couldn’t hold a cricket bat if his life depended on it.

And the third, who few have heard of, likely couldn’t hold up his khaki chaddis long enough to walk to the crease.

Sure guys why don’t you lead a probe into what happened.

You have BCCI president. Shukla has been in BCCI since a long time.

Rahul Dravid was the captain when he and Greg Chappell replaced Sachin as ODI opener with Robin Uthappa.

Dravid is not as smart as he thinks he is - actually the lesser he thinks the better it is for the team.

I also think he projects a straightforward and very upright image but it is deceptive. After those Uthappa shenanigans people should have been wary about trusting him and his decisions. It is better to build a good team, train and prepare well and play fairly. But no.... this chap wants to play politics and try to doctor pitches. He outsmarted himself.

No matter - he has been rewarded with an extension.

He doesn't have to be smart. Least he could do is not make things worse by having unnecessary interactions with curators. This has become a habit for him.

Exactly the point. They got spooked by glen maxwell and mitch marsh s capability rather than their own bowling strength.. india won the toss in wtc and like a lunatic chose to field first when it was amply clear after 2 hours of cloudy conditions next 5 days would be absolutely sunny.. we could have easily piled on 400 on that oval pitch and won the match

And where is President Roger Michael Humphrey Binny?

Don't make excuses for negligence. You dint have enough trust in your players despite knowing full well how good they are. Deflection at its finest.

I blame dravid, kl Rahul, iyer and sky for the batting collapse.

And no not just that, why did they switch to spin when pacers had Aussies down for 3/42??

Kuldeep is also a choker. 280 290 would have been a winning score though.

Why dint we bring in slips? I saw 2 or 3 missed chances through slip.

It honestly doesn't matter whether they were former world cup winners or not, the problem would still be the same. Even in a corporate environment, it's not the case that your boss demands accountability only because he thinks he can do everything that you are supposed to do to a higher level.

If these observations are correct then their questions are not a million miles away from the avg fan who is trying to make sense of the final.
