Ishan Kishan refused BCCI's offer at redemption in Test series against England before Dhruv Jurel's heroics: Report

According to a report, Ishan Kishan was given a shot at redemption by BCCI before Dhruv Jurel capitalised on his absence to put on a heroic show in Ranchi

Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan were not included in BCCI's annual retainers after the two repeatedly ignored the board's orders to participate in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season. However, it seems that around the time BCCI secretary Jay Shah sent a letter to centrally contracted players not to prioritise the IPL over domestic cricket, Ishan was given a shot at redemption by the board before Dhruv Jurel capitalised on his absence to carve out a heroic performance in Ranchi and help India claim the five-match Test series against England.

Ishan last played for India in November 2023, in the home T20I series against Australia. In December, midway through the tour of South Africa, he pulled out, reportedly citing mental health fatigue. He thereafter missed the T20I contest against Afghanistan at home before discussion began over his possible return during the England Test series with the management not eager to continue with KL Rahul as their wicketkeeper-batter on spinning tracks.

When Ishan was not picked for the series, India's head coach Rahul Dravid explained that the youngster needed to make himself available first and that he ought to show some game time to prove his eligibility. The former India batter also added that the management has been in constant touch with Ishan.

Despite Dravid's words, the Indian team management gave Ishan a shot at redemption, according to a report in ESPNCricinfo, offering him a way into the Test squad for the series against England. But the 25-year-old refused it, saying that he wasn't ready yet.

Although the report doesn't specify the timing, it is likely that the Indian team made the request after Rahul was ruled out of the second Test match with the management concerned about KS Bharat's disappointing run of form with the bat. The latter was removed from the XI after the opening two matches in the series, before Jurel made his debut in Rajkot. The 23-year-old showed glimpses of his abilities in the third Test, both with the bat and gloves, before scoring a match-winning 90 in Ranchi to help India seal the series.

Jurel's maiden Test fifty helped India reduce the first-innings deficit to 46 runs in the fourth Test before he scored a patient 39 not out in the second innings to guide India to a five-wicket win. Jurel was adjudged as the Player of the Match for his efforts.

'Has it made Ishan Kishan poorer?': Sourav Ganguly's message for Jay Shah, Ajit Agarkar, Roger Binny amid contracts row

Sourav Ganguly has an advice for Jay Shah, Ajit Agarkar and Roger Binny regarding Ishan Kishan's case.

Three days removed from BCCI's decision to snub Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer from their central contracts… and the development continues to be hotter than ever. The two India batters paid the price for neglecting the BCCI's orders of playing Ranji Trophy, leaving Iyer, Kishan in no-man's land, and though they are gearing up to play the IPL 2024 for the respective franchises, it could be a while before they are seen in an India jersey again.

The BCCI's radical call has divided the Indian cricketing fraternity. While most have backed the board's decision of taking matters in their own hands, others feel Ishan and Iyer are a bit hard done. Especially, Iyer, who apparently had an injury to deal with, played the first two Tests against India and was their third-highest run-getter at the 2023 World Cup. Not much sympathies for Kishan though, who had gone MIA since his withdrawal from India's squad during the tour of South Africa.

As reactions poured in, Sourav Ganguly had said he was surprised by Kishan and Iyer's decisions to skip Ranji and not adhere to the BCCI's norms. Adding further to this, the former India captain feels secretary Jay Shah, president Roger Binny and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar need to have a word with Kishan to correct the youngster's course of action.

"I think this is the first time that someone has not played or ignored red-ball domestic cricket. Otherwise, all of them have played Ranji Trophy when they were free. I am sure the BCCI will take proper action," Ganguly told Times of India.

"For someone like Ishan Kishan, BCCI secretary Jay Shah, president Roger Binny and the selectors need to speak to him. All this while he has played Ranji and then played white-ball cricket. Has it made him a poorer player? It hasn't."

Delhi Capitals follow the same template, informs Ganguly

Ganguly, a former BCCI chief, who has always been very vocal about the significance of First-class cricket in India, explained how the same formula is being implemented at Delhi Capitals as well. Ganguly, the director of the DC franchise in the IPL, informed that those picked in the squad and during the action are measured on the basis of their performance in two of India's premier domestic white-ball tournaments. Even those who are no longer representing India, are having to pass the litmus Test of either an ODI or T20 to get DC's stamp of approval.

"All the players picked in Delhi Capitals have played Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Ranji Trophy. Even Ishant Sharma has played Ranji. Khaleel Ahmed has played the full season after a long time. We worked with him in the off season and got him fit to play Ranji. There are only one or two exceptions who need to be spoken to," pointed out Ganguly.

Looks like the correct call was taken.

Kishan think of himself as bradman. These franchise will not entertain him once he will go out of form. He is no gujju also whom ambani’s will take care once he will hit the bad patch. He is getting too big for his boot, in company of Khateek bandya he also bcame a chapri, BCCI should brought him to his knee, let him play ipl and dont allow him even in ranji going forward.

Kishan was frustrated in the manner he was treated to accommodate Rahul at any cost in they team.

Kishan was dropped even after scoring a 200.

Makeshift wicketkeeper and middle order batsman.Rahul was preferred over Kishan in the test series.

I think he was frustrated and felton unwanted in the team and he may have been treated shabily  by the team management

I think he also scored like 4 or 5 fifties in  a row. Most of the guys are used as stop gap. Kuldeep yadav is another guy.  The thing is KL Rahul was turned into keeper in order to accommodate him. It impacted even Rishabh Pant.  Rahul Dravid has no accountability in that regard. So Dravid advised a genuine wicket keeper to play domestic when they have part time keeper taking his place.

Kishan was proving to be terrible in T20s with his zero strike rotation skills.

He had some utility in Test Cricket as a keeper bat but looks like Jurel is a 10x upgrade there too.

Won't be surprised if he really takes it out in IPL too though Ganju Samsung may not give him much chance to bat higher up.

Whole sequence of events has been bizarre, rational minds don't act like this.Maybe Kishan is having some mental troubles/breakdown, needs stong support system, counseling....instead of a witch hunt and hate campaign.

Mental health is not talked about enough in this country.

nai bhai

this hutiya thinks he is invincible and will have a permanent MI spot just because he plays for that team and has their backing. If he was in any other franchise he would know his aukaat. This is what being said now, there will come a time when players will think why the hell do i need to bother playing internationals and dealing with BCCi when I can just play for my IPL team and earn crores.

what will happen is the england football model where FA and PL are two different entities, where :

Do the two bodies not have the same interests – the success of English football?

The two bodies do have the same interests in relation to the success of English football but the Premier League is only concerned with the top flight of the professional game ,whereas the FA is concerned with all levels of the game, professional and amateur. Consequently, there can be a conflict where the Premier League is looking purely in commercial terms and the FA is concerned with maintaining the integrity of the game in England.

Once this happens, will IPL owners break away from BCCI control? what are controls put in place by BCCI to ensure this doesn't happen. The money BCCI has is the TV rights sold for IPL, what if the IPL teams association want that money ? Scary times for cricket because once international cricket collapses, there isnt a formal structure in place for T20 league structures left

Why after every test there were reports about Rahul playing the next test. Why was Rahul not told to play Ranji and  prove his fitness.

He deserves the axe but I don’t like how he is being targeted with such hateful vengeance by BCCI.

Looks bad when a big organisation targets a not so big player.

They have not permanently closed the door on either him or Iyer and even mentioned as much. Later this year they may get the contracts they lost if they course correct.

Neither of them are helpless rookie nobodies who are being singled out & thrown under the bus, that perception is an incorrect one.

Ever since Gill came in KL Rahul lost his favorite opening spot. So he had to be played down the order. With Pant breathing down his neck Rahul had no place as he was going through a rough patch. That is when KL Rahul's keeping was given importance by Dravid. They sat Pant out in one of the match. Almost all the keepers in LOI were impacted whenever KL Rahul played. Kishan, Samson, Pant et al. With so many speicalist keepers at disposal it was bizarre that it KL Rahul was being backed.

The "Project Rahul." has created all the problem with the team.

With the sucess of young player ie Jaiswal,Gill,Sarfaraz ,Jurel,Akashdeep the team management should give debut to Paddikal and should not waste time  in Patidar ,who the team management feels is place holder for Virat and Rahul.

With Virat not interested in.tests ,Rahul.may take Patidar place in next series

To make sure KL Rahul's position is not impacted they also make him a captain. Almost all these captains have tons of sponsors. Rohit/Rahul/Kohli.  New addition is SKY. Their relevance at the international level is important for these sponsors. 31 year old averaging 34 in tests after 50 tests is somehow less replacable due to this.

Did cricinfo report Kishan refused? Is there any credible article? After a lot of backlash at the social media i see news like this. Are they trying to save their face? I do not trust any of these guys. Some dressing room issues they are not sharing openly. Iyer getting dropped is even more puzzling in that case. Iyer was already playing Tests. His form was no worse than some of the form Gill until Gill made that lucky 100. Gill sucked in world cup too.

Rahul Dravid will show his true evil colours once Rishabharjuna Pantatunga makes a comeback or makes himself available
