Eddie Smith recorded him having clocked 143.7 kph there too . Shane Bond also clocked 151.2 kph in a triseries in Australia and quite a few in the 148 kph region in the previous year so it's not implausible that he could clock upto 153 kph. Bond had stress fractures in his back after the 2003 World Cup that reduced his speeds Yeah..McGrath was hitting 140+ in the series you mentioned. He was very similar to Ambrose in his younger days. What I mean to say is I don't feel all the bowlers suddenly started clocking higher speeds in the same WC altogether. It's too much of a coincidence. When I compare the 160k delivery of Shoaib with that 158k spell of Tait vs Pakistan...I see a significant amount of difference.

I do think Akhtar, Lee and Bond did bowl some of their quickest deliveries ever but the speeds were off by around 3-4 kph . But those guys were pretty visually quick too. Bond was rushing the Aussies for pace. The likes of Martyn could not move their feet . Ganguly was bowled by a 153 bullet which I could see only on replay. Neither could Ganguly . Then there was Lee to Atapattu and the ball with which Akhtar dismissed Tendulkar . Some seriously quick deliveries in that World Cup.

As a matter of fact, the batsmen spoke about the pace. And they spoke about the Indians as to how quick they were and how hard they were hitting the bat. Dont think the speedguns were inflated. It was the world cup, that too in SA. Compare that with the slower bowlers, Wasim, Mahmood and all were bowling at their regular pace itself. How do you justify that?
Scarface Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 Ambrose/Walsh were mid-130s [trundlers? :-)] but with other accurate weapons ofcourse. Used to think Rose was pretty quick while watching the 97 tour - but perhaps he pales in comparison with current tearaways https://www.espncricinfo.com/records/bowling-speeds-2-283875

tapandrun Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 Walsh was bit slower than Ambrose, posted that previously as well bowling flat out fast only came with Lee and Akthar before that bowlers would bowl some quick spells and some rubbish so their will be large variation of the speeds and also there were no speedometer that time for bowler to know if they are exactly how fast they were bowling. Ambrose would be early 130s to mid 140s and Walsh would be late 120s to early 140s. Merv Dillion kind of similar bowler the last of Ambrose, Walsh, Garner kind was 130 kmph - 140ish Kmph. They extracted extra bounce from a v. difficult length so they were hard to play and score off. Then came the era when bouncers were not allowed and flat out fast bowler were emerging so WI cricket pivoted towards Edwards, Best and Tylor kind of bowler who were fast but not that tall and its been that way since. When Roach debut he was v.quick too touching 150s in test then had back injury or something and came with reduced pace.
Chaos Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 Why talk about grand pas? They are 135-140 during peak and settled in 130s later

Walsh maybe 132-138 in his prime, as he was around 125-132 in his hey days. Walsh and Ambrose on their last leg bowling around 130
zen Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 Ambrose was not like Bond, Lee, & Akthar, bowlers who are known for their pace. Ambrose would bowl quick when needed where his fast bowl could be around 145. singhvivek141 and The Hound 2

putrevus Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 (edited) Ambrose and Walsh had plenty of speed when they needed to rattle any batsman with both speed and bounce. They could put fear of god in any batsmen even with helmets. Walsh hitting Prabhakar in Mohali in 1995 put fear of god in all Indian batsman including Sachin Tendulkar, no one was even willing to stand and face their wrath. They all folded like cheap tents that too on a Indian pitch which had true bounce. Ambrose was not even there during that tour. Akthar could bowl faster but he never was as dangerous as these WI bowler both physically and mentally. Walsh if he wanted could have bowled lot more nastier than Ambrose due to his action. Edited June 26, 2024 by putrevus
Singh bling Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 Dean Jones asked Ambrose to remove sweatband and after that Aussie team was fearing for their life. Dean Jones clearly said that 3 bowls he faced were quickest in his life. zen, The Hound and AKane 3

Lord Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 Ambrose was slightly faster version of McGrath. Walsh in underrated but probably the best trundler ever. Rightarmfast 1

I wouldn’t call Walsh a trundler most of his career. He was mid 130s with loads of skills. He was a trundler for the last 1-2 years at the end. also Haddlee, Botham, Kapil were also trundlers (by ICF standards) i personally don’t rate bowlers like Philander, Bhuvi or Asif as trundlers Edited June 26, 2024 by maniac singhvivek141 1
