Not to Asian games. China gets 200+ medals. To the World Championship meets in Archery, boxing etc., they send their B teams and India perform better there.

China gets lots of gold in Asian games,over half are gold.which means high quality.

 

India got around 1/4 gold .Also India's athletics medals don't translate in Olympics but China does in diving, swimming, weightlifting ,badminton and gymnastics.

 

In women's athletics China medals as well.

One has to appreciate Indian hockey head coach Craig Fulton who didn't go all celebrating after the win v Australia. He made the sensible decision. It was a pool game, an important one, but still we need to win the next 3 matches to win gold. Or atleast win the next one and win one of the next two to receive a medal. This is why its important to appear stoic in front of the cameras like Fulton and don't get hyper excited, lest the drop will be far more damaging if we take it easy. Its also important to aim for the gold than bronze, because this gives better focus on the next match, quarter, penalty corner, possession.

India isn't top 3 in the world in many events. So not favorites as you put it. 

 

We can beat (historically speaking) East Asians in athletics, tennis, hockey, golf (not any more), but not the goras and Africans/African North Americans. Heck in AG we even medal in rowing, sailing, canoeing, cycling, swimming (earlier) etc. Plus our sports like kabaddi, cricket, chess, billiards/snooker are often there.

 

In CWG we dominate in shooting, wrestling, weightlifting, archery, TT, badminton but real competition is elsewhere. 

 

Come the Olympics, we are placed 5-20 in so many events (margins are small) but not 1-3. Iran for instance have targeted some sports like men's wrestling, taekwondo where they are elite, best of the best especially men's wrestling. Koreans in archery, TKD, judo....Japanese in women's wrestling, judo, gymnastics, China different league. And all East Asians are damn good in marksmanship, like how goras dominate upper body strength based throwing events, how blacks dominate in track events.

 

Unless we develop a few specialties where we are the world's best or close, it will always be an uphill climb in Olympics, and Asian Games success won't translate.

boxing has 2 bronzes w/o 3rd place. why comment when you dont know?

We arent doing too bad till now, need a medal of a different colour though from somewhere.

I don’t know her credentials, but the Archery coach has to be replaced. As soon as Ankita releases, I hear a “great shot or good shot” aur teer lagi saath par  bc teer  pahunchne tak ruk jaati!  I felt like strangulating the coach!

Even if we beat GBR, medal is not assured just saying. Let's say we win this one and lose in the SF. We may be facing one of Netherlands or Belgium. That won't be an easy task. So we have to win the next two to get a medal. If we aim for bronze medal, we are most likely to end up with nothing. Always aim for the gold even if we are playing sh1t hockey

Yeah Boxing is always 2 bronze. Getting to Semis is bronze confirmed, no 3rd place match, no repechage.

China has only 8 medals in men's athletics,5 of them in walks . One bronze in high jump,one silver in triple jump and the famous gold in 110 meter hurdles which was the rare proper men's athletics gold in Athens.
