Noone cares about basketball other than US and wannabe kids in other countries. There are perhaps 3 or 4 countries with one elite player in their team. Women's basketball is not even worth watching.

Basketball because no other country other than US plays it seriously anyways. I'm glad softball and baseball were removed this olympics.

Basketball is going global. French players went #1 in NBA drafts in 2023 and 2024. Two lottery picks from France in 2023 and three lottery picks from France in 2024 (including top two). 

 

There is increasing European top talent. Last 6 years consecutively, the NBA MVPs have been non-USA players. Giannis, Giannis, Jokic, Jokic, Embiid, Jokic. Do also consider the Canadian influence. This Olympics itself, Canada has a scary good team.

Just because you don't care, it does not becomes a bad sport.

It's a sport. Saying it shouldn't be in the Olympics which is supposed to be about equality and the spirit of equity through sport. A sport that is dominated by only one country where no other country even has a chance shouldn't be in the Olympics

Well said. Olympics should be about sports which are played by a large number of countries. Or else we should have kabbadi there.

Having it as Olympic sport only has grown the game to so many countries. FIBA once it changed it rules to allow professional basket ball players has helped it grow internationally.

 

Other teams are winning in world championships. If USA slips others will win here too.

 

Take field Hockey , India was winning gold medal forever but what is happening now.

 

Other teams have caught up and surprassed India.

Cant believe it. Just landed 20 secs ago. While the flight was in air descending suddenly got 4g and with trembling hands saw the olympics website to see Vinesh against someone and i realised its a semi final!!! Unbelievable!!

No, they didn't surpass India. They changed the rules. The biggest change was moving away from natural grass to astro turf. Playing hockey on grass needed a great amount of skill to control the ball on the field as grass/natural field isn't as flat as astro turf so you need skill to maintain control on the ball.

 

Next they gradually changed the rules with emphasis on Penalty Corner, fitness and speed instead of skills. Earlier hockey used to be similar to football with a lot of game played in the midfield. Now it's no longer the case. They've made it end-to-end sport and majority of the game is played at either end. The main players are not skillful midfielders but someone who is good at converting PCs.

 

The game is unrecognizable from what it used to be. Instead of catching up and getting better, Europeans simply changed the rules and made the game to align with their strengths - speed, fitness, stamina and strength - instead of skill. That's why Pakistan is a non-entity these days, and kudos to India they're still competing.

 

This scenario would be equivalent to US taking over cricket and changing rules to make the game 60 pitches per side (10 overs), bowler shouldn't be allowed to bounce/pitch the ball on the pitch, and the ball should be below batsman's waist. This is what Europeans did to hockey, and didn't really "catch up and surpass" India.

Julien Alfred 100 meter gold medal winner she did not train herself in St lucia. She trained in Texas under  track and field coach Edrick Floreal.  Neeraj chopra did his preparation in finland. His coach is a German. I don't think getting picke for training is not going to be as straight forward for rural people.

Other teams were able to beat India because the other teams changed the surface and the nature of the game. Where is the growth in places like South America or Asia or Africa? Maybe it should not be in the Olympics till other teams across the world at least have a chance?
