'Want to play for India in all three formats' - Suryakumar hopes to make a Test comeback

Suryakumar Yadav, India's T20I captain, hasn't given up on Test cricket, even though it's been more than a year since he featured in his only game in the format so far

 

 

Not originally included in a largely young Mumbai squad for the pre-season Buchi Babu Invitational tournament in Tamil Nadu, Suryakumar has informed the Mumbai selectors of his availability for the second half of the first-class competition that is set to run until the end of August. He will play under Sarfaraz Khan after requesting the selectors to not change the leadership. It's likely that Suryakumar will feature in Mumbai's fixture against Jammu and Kashmir in Salem starting August 27.

 

 

"I want to play for India in all three formats," Suryakumar was quoted as saying by the Times of India. "Playing in Buchi Babu will give me good practice for the red-ball tournaments this season."

 

 

Suryakumar recently led India to a 3-0 series sweep over Sri Lanka in his first tour as full-time T20I captain. He wasn't picked for the three-match ODI series, with selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar categorically stating that Suryakumar wasn't in their ODI plans for the moment.

 

 

With India not playing any more T20Is until the series against Bangladesh in October, Suryakumar has a decent runway of red-ball matches to push for a comeback to Test cricket. The Buchi Babu tournament will be followed by the season-opening Duleep Trophy in Anantapur, which will be contested by four teams picked by the national selectors.

 

 

Suryakumar's most recent first-class appearance came in last season's Duleep Trophy in July 2023. Overall, in 82 first-class matches, he has scored 5628 runs and averages 43.62 with 29 fifties and 14 hundreds.

Single biggest reason for the World Cup disaster last year. Only batter who didn't step up at any stage in the World Cup and play a match winning knock.

SKY now has massive PR thanks to the WT20 catch followed by his captaincy in the T20 series. Gained millions of "fans" in the last month or so on his SM handles.

 

BCCI might just get him into the ODI team now to keep up the commercial interests .

He could have done a Miller(CWC SF),but showed his limitations against well planned bowling and fielding

Was used badly too. Even in comfortable situations in league stages, KL came ahead. Then was demoted in finals.

 

Gill was bigger disappointment for me.

Nothing wrong in SKY wanting to play all three formats , unlike Pandya, he is playing domestic red cricket to prove himself.

 

I think he is done in two formats.Even in this T20 he was not that explosive.Teams have worked out his areas to some extent.

Gill is much younger and had just had a bout of dengue. Also he batted well in the semis and at a good clip.

 

SKY wasn't used badly so much as he was not used because he doesn't have the skill to build an innings in the middle.  They were forced to send Fraudeja ahead of him in the finals.

In league games he wasnt even used as a finisher from good positions in end. Even in semis there was an opportunity. As a result he barely had time in the middle except Eng game. In final most failed and suddenly he was required to bat long.

Looked like a fool against those slower ones,had all the time but couldn't put bat on most deliveries

I know that sometimes a player can only answer leading questions put by journalists.

 

Then again, perhaps his management and Yadav himself think that enough time has passed since his utterly incompetent, clueless and in fact derisory performance in the ODI WC.   

 

And that people have forgotten, how utterly, unsparingly and relentlessly crap he was, so he can once again stake a claim through playing media games.

 

Based on what I've seen, he should stick to T20I.
