My take? He is an individual first and Indian next.

 

Let him live his life. He has sacrificed a lot and, if that is the way he wants to blow off steam, so be it. He bears no responsibility to the rest of the nation or to his fans.

 

That said, for his own sake, hope he doesn't get carried away.

Quite safe, especially in a country like Singapore which is top tier even for a developed country. 

 

It was a pact between Gukesh and his coach, Gajewski, in the middle of the match. He has a fear of heights, and he has overcome it here

Sagar Shah doesn't get enough recognition and love IMO. The work he and his wife have done with Chessbase India, right from talent scouting to giving so much informative content in one place, and he also does a lot for youngsters, and for growth of the game.

 

Wish govt honours him, he deserves the topmost journalism award, and more. Will go down as one of the most influential chess figures in history, guy has documented all these prodigies from when they were aged 6 or 7 !!!!! He was one of the key reasons Chennai Masters got scheduled in December 2023 for last minute lifeline for Gukesh and Arjun. Without that, I think Gukesh was behind Giri and So. 

 

High time chess community gets its due, including unsung local coaches, arbiters, chess organizers. I want these kinds of people to get top govt awards. Our tax money too should go towards building this beautiful community, which has risen from ground zero to make India the world's best at something so global.

I don't like DMK in general @ash @Stan AF @Vicks57 @vvvslaxman and any other poster here with whom I might have had a political disagreement (hopefully I was never uncivil in any of those discussions). But without them this was impossible. They sponsored Chennai Masters 2023 last minute to give a couple of Indians a chance at candidates berth. For that we must give due credit, country above all. 

 

Udayanidhi Stalin seems to be a driving force in many of these decisions. Even the successful Chess Olympiad organized in Mahabalipuram, the hockey Asian Champions Trophy (which I attended 3 days including the final day when gold/bronze were decided), or the recent racing circuit. Happy to see TN government take initiative, and hopefully more state governments follow suit, show large hearts like TN and Odisha. Not every state can be a Haryana but each can adopt 1/2 sports and funnel investment, resources. 

 

Anyway since this is Gukesh thread, hats off to the Dravidian parties (2013 WCC match in AIADMK reign...though Anand lost the crown, 7 year old Gukesh was in attendance, spark was lit) for making these kinds of days possible.

Btw Hari is a second of both Gukesh and women's world champion Ju Wenjun. Great soldier of Indian chess, he was the link between Anand era and this new gen. Stellar career, even if he shifts more to training/coaching now.

Gukesh's most important coach, who moulded him in his formative years....Gukesh became GM under his tutelage. 

 

GM Vishnu Prasanna....also runs a chess school in Chennai, expecting more great players to pop up from his academy. Honour such people.

I have heard him say this before. The type of mistakes you make in faster time controls and the style of play that is rewarded in faster (and slower) time controls are different. Salty Magnus lol, classical is the ultimate format, all traditions/history of chess tied to this format....all prestigious events classical. Funny how his opinion change coincided with decline in his classical performance. 

Gukesh/Arjun/Pragg is just the trailer Maggie, we have an entire army of baby super GMs waiting to be unleashed after them.

Crazy scenes from Chennai since Gukesh arrived. The crowds, media, him having to hop from place to place to attend felicitations, politicians and celebs wanting to be clicked with him. 

 

Last remember this for Neeraj Chopra (among individuals, not team) after he won Tokyo gold. He said that it exhausted him because went on too long, around 2 months, and had to pull out of javelin events rest of the year. Gukesh has also pulled out from world rapid and blitz (Wall Street, NYC, Dec 26-31...in case some ICFer wants to attend). 

 

Indians can sometimes be too OTT, putting even more pressure on our players. 

 

Gukesh will be in action in Wijk aan Zee (Wimbledon of chess) in mid January, against a stacked field, he will be everyone's target there. This circus shouldn't continue for too long, let the kid breathe.

Right now this lad is rated higher than arjun. But all in top 10. And there is a and still going strong. I did not know India dominated like this

Chennai had three of top four grand masters. It's obvious that it's a big deal there. Why the fuss?

Don't follow chess but chanced upon a short discussion with Gukesh's Dad. Journalist asking him about his sacrifice(quitting medical practice)for his son. His spontaneous response was, there's no sacrifice, it's my son.
