  1. 1. Which ineptitude was the costliest?

    • Inept bowling besides Bumrah
    • Inept batting after #5
    • Inept catching

Indian Tail/bowlers who do not want to bat at all. What were those shots from Bumrah,Siraj,Prasidh ? Getting out on first ball. 7/41 and 6/31 ? Get in bowlers who can actually fight and not these gadhas. Siraj and Prasidh contributed ANDA with both bat and ball and Bumrah as usual goes missing after first innings. Thakur is a no. 11 now. Who included him ? 9 catches dropped in the freakin match and 3 by this Jaiswal.

The Guardian: "A game when their catching has been unreliable, their fielding often poor, their captaincy unremarkable, their batting a mix of feast, famine and failure – five centuries, six ducks, two catastrophic collapses – and their fighting spirit prone to sudden disappearance.

On the second morning, 430 for three at one stage, they luxuriated, and on the fifth they languished. This has been a humbling defeat and an embarrassing one."

Sums it up well.

I think to call it embarrassing is harsh

This is the problem with Indian fans. IPL success doesnt translate to overseas test success. Only 4 batsmen scored. Rest of the team was a disaster with bat. Minus Bumrah in first innings entire bowling line up looked toothless. If a young Indian batting lineup scores over 800 in england then one can imagine pitch condition.

We expect these boys to be world beaters from day 1. England at home is one of the most difficult team to beat and we expected them to roll over.

*Nobody* expected them to roll over

Inability to bat long and play big test innings, not ODI innings. They need to understand when scoring is fast, they have more time in the game.

1)  There seemed to be a general lack of thinking / planning from the Captain / Coach / Bowling coach.

Rohit / Dravid / Mhambrey combo felt like a disaster in tests and bowler development generally. Gill / GG / Morkel is giving them tough competition.

2)  Fighting spirit was badly missing on day 5.

3)  The faster Indian bowlers seem very reluctant to play FC and / or practice bowling 15+ overs a day. They feel rusty / undercooked every time they bowl in tests these days. And the slower pacers who don't look rusty just float the ball up at medium pace.

Neither option is good enough.

4)  Bumrah's performance is often dipping in the 2nd innings in the last 9 months or so. He is reluctant  to bowl bouncers and yorkers even if the match situation so demands. If this is due to his bad back then it does not bode well for us in the future.

5)  Our fielding coaches are not doing a good job for the last 2 or 3 years. The catching lapses are a result of this.

6)  Removing non-performing seniors was a good and bold step. But bringing back other oldies like Karun and Shardul sort of negates this good move and was largely instrumental in our lower-middle order collapses.

These are the broad reasons which led to lower-middle order collapses, poor support bowling, sub-par bowling in the 2nd innings, no fighting on day 5 and poor catching ... and hence the loss.

England did not score big 100s either. They scored at a faster pace than India.

Batting is an issue.

Too many openers in the team. Gill, Sai. It's different when you have to wait for your batting.

Pant and Karun have to swap their positions. It's their batting style and Pant being a wk, which determines their batting position

The teams management didn't made use of the A tour.

The team was selected as per the players who were available from the IPL.

Only players were selected, whose team were not qualified for to 4.

Now the team has a small set of players to select.

Again Gambhir is not interested in some players is Sarfaraj, Eashwaran, Akashdeep etc.

Ideally fresh set of players ,new players should have been selected for A tour.

Lots of time has been wasted on Mukesh Kumar, Avesh ,etc .

The Selectors should identify couple of openers ,fast bowlers and back them.

Selectors should personally  make the states team to play fast bowlers ie Tyagi,Sen,Umran

India dropped 11 catches in 2017-18 RSA Centurion test, in Cape Town Dhawan had a couple of costly misses. 20+ catches dropped in 2018 Eng tour, we had a dedicated thread that time to track the drops.

What did Kohli win as captain in SENA apart from 2018 BGT against weakened Australia? Nothing in white ball either. Rohit was a meme test player till 2018-19. These seniors abandoned Eng tour and ran away to play IPL, when we had a chance to win a series there.

Always harsh on youngsters. Y'all acting as if dropped catches is a new thing. Heck Kohli dropped a sitter of Baz in NZ which cost us 300 runs, a chance at series draw.

If Ishant was not kicked out and we played the last test in 2021 would have won in all 3 of SEA in a year.

Let us avoid 'ifs and buts' scenarios in sports. Hindsight is always wonderful. Let us just back the personnel we have atm and hope they come good in 2-3 years time, and complete what the previous generation couldn't.

Dravid/Rohit abandoned planning, team building for the future (just like 2010-12 days) and we are paying a price now. Too harsh on youngsters.

Previous generation team was lucky in a way that after Dhoni's exit, we didn't play in SENA for almost 3 years. 2015-17 we played RSA, Eng, NZ, Aus at home and won a lot....by then Vijay, Dhawan, Kohli, Pujara, Rahane, Ashwin, Jadeja, Shami, Umesh, Ishant were seasoned players, and Ashwin-Jadeja duo was a cheat code for the captain. Away assignments were 2016 WI, and the tough one 2015 Lanka (higher ranked that time) which was a great win albeit in friendlier conditions than SENA. We gained confidence and aura, same group gelled together and in a happy space before the 2017-18 round of SENA assignments.

Gill's start is tougher, straightaway against Poms in their den, who finished very strongly in previous WTC cycle and beat NZ in NZ before this. Next year another nightmare tour in NZ, a country against whom even 2020-21 India couldn't do jack. So keep expectations low, and don't be too disheartened with defeats. Gambhir must go, and selection issues should also be sorted out, but this core will become a force to be reckoned with at least in next cycle. Ask any neutral about our youngsters and nobody will question the quality and ceiling of these guys, even our bench strength....I mean we have Iyer, Jurel, Sarfu, Kuldeep, NKR, Washi outside the XI !!!

Yeah that home/away stretch pre WTC was easy for India in the sense all of SENA used to be toured in the same year.

That is their team strength , how can we penalize our batsmen for it.Yes it would be nice if they scored big 100s but main problem is bowling.

Only two out of the top six scored in our second innings. They needed to match the first innings score. Pitch was still flat. They needed to bat longer giving less overs for England to bat. We could bat just 96 overs in the second innings that too on a flat surface. It doesn't really bode well for the batting. Can't bat on flat pitches, can't bat on helpful pitches.

That is why you play with 6 batsmen. Some batsmen get out early. No they did not have match anything. It would have been nice if they could score more but Rahul completely shut shop after Pant was gone.

Rahul played 250 balls and if he had scored  40 -50 runs more in those deliveries, it would have helped the team more.

They don't need to do anything different.Jaiswal, Pant and Gill did just fine, I am not finding fault with Rahul either .Everyone has their own method to score runs.

If  bowlers cannot  take wickets with new ball defending 370 then it is not batsmen's fault. Their bowlers were able to extract more out of the pitch than Indian bowlers.Accepting the short coming is first stepto improve.

Yes batsman can always score more runs but I willl take 835 runs scored in a test match any day. I am flabbergasted that you still are complaining.
