This quote is becoming more and more relevant with time. "You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself becoming a villain"

And this is AR Rahman we are talking about. Probably the most decorated influential musician of my lived memory. He thinks he is not getting the work because of his religion ( small detail, he is music director for Ramayana along with Hanz Zimmer ) , in a changing order.

And he just converted couple of decades back. Imagine if this priveleged genius who has been given the best of projects, is feeling like a victim, what chance do we have with multi generational impoverished / labour class converts.

We have zero chance in reasoning here. You either counter missionary zeal or get rolled over.

Sounds as fake as Azharuddin  ( who was made captain ahead of many seniors of his time ) playing the religion card when apprehended for match fixing.  Never mind that Ajay Jadeja, Ajay Sharma and few others were equally blamed.

No matter how much fame, money, adulation comes during good times - when things don’t go your way - pulling up the religion card is always an “ option “ .

This **** is acceptable only in India. He was celebrated as a rare genius by the entire nation. He is the voice of the most iconic rendition of Vande Mataram.

What a fall.

Taking about music - I watched a couple of films recently which highlighted AR as music director, and both films (Thug Life and Tere Ishq Mein) had average soundtrack (hardly 1-2 memorable or noticable songs from both films combined. From these two films,  I mostly listen to “Awaara Angaara” from Tera Ishq Mein).

So can the filmmakers be blamed for not wanting him? Now he can appear, relatively speaking, more like a 90s phenomenon than a consistent performer who gave memorable music decades after decades like RD, LP, etc.

PS from the top of the mind, I can’t recall any of his memorable “Hindi and dubbed in Hindi film” albums apart from Roja (1992), Bombay (1995), Rangeela (1995), Sapne (1997 - can recall only one song - Chande Re Chande Re), Dil Se (1998) and Taal (1999), along with Rang De Basanti (2005) post 90s. Additionally, he had some seasonal flavor hits like “Muqbaala Muqbaala Laila”.

The issue with AR could be “over expectations” due to “overvaluing himself”. When the results did not align with his expectations, rather than examining his own body of work since the 90s, he looked outside.

When you unnecessarily look outside, to identify reasons beyond your control for your failures relative to your expectations, you usually arrive at generic mundane, at times laughable, conclusions.

Without having much success in recent movies and giving shitty BGM and music in movies like Chava, he thinks he’s being sideline because of his religion and that Bollywood is communal. Bhai wah!

Every genius eventually hits a wall. Only some realize it before it happens (Gavaskar) or just as it starts to happen (Ashwin). Most others blame the world around them for their downfall because they don't understand why the things that led to 15-30 years of success don't seem to work anymore.

Telugu guys are much more vocal in Rahman's criticism ... Rahman should reflect on his own inability to deliver chartbusters or think about his words on Bollywood not giving him work

Watch from 0:30 to 1:00.

There were already inside jokes in the industry 15 years back that AR Rehman had lost creativity and all his songs sounded the same and he would struggle to get work due to this.

This almost proved to be prophetic.

He doesn't get much work in his mother tounge tamil too, why? The fact is even though he is a great, the tastes have changed. Newer generation of directors have come who work with music directors of a their times, & their age. He has just become a boomer uncle who isn't able to understand that work has changed.

It has nothing to do with him being a muslim, even in Tamil you have Santosh Narayan who produces ARR style music (he worked on some movies with ARR). So why will they pay ARR top dollar when they can get temu ARR?

ARR is not being sidelined. He just charges a lot more than new music directors. He is still the best in TN. Anirudh is the worst of all.

Exactly, there are also musicians like Santosh Narayanan who can give ARR style music without having to spend as much as ARR.

Telugu people feelings are hurt with what he did to ram charan. Ayappa mala is very sacred in Telugu states. It’s takes lot of devotion and sacrifice for one to go through Ayaapa Mala journey. I also don’t know what Ram charan was doing thinking on attending a religious event while wearing mala.

I think the truth is AR Rahman is mediocre now, the 90’s version was on a different level, modern stuff is just mediocre. Obviously he won’t say my skill level is worse now than the 90’s, easy to play the Muslim victim card which is clearly false.

To be honest 90’s sound was great, modern stuff is rubbish.

I will take maestro Ilayaeaja any day over this jingle artist called ARR.

IR would use real musicians, Orchestra and symphony. His songs are more enjoyable and everlasting than the flour of the season tunes from ARR. Even Amit Trivedi is much better than AR with works like Dave D and others. This song is at least 40 years old and

still is so soothing.
