When is the right time for Vaibhav Sooryavamshi’s International T20 debut?

Everyone knows it’s inevitable that Vaibhav Sooryavamshi will play for India at some point. The only real question is when is the right time to unleash him at the international level?

Just look at his bat speed—it’s absolutely insane. The way he transfers weight, the pickup, the swing arc… it reminds me of that rare category of players who are naturally built for modern T20 cricket. You can’t teach that kind of bat speed. It’s instinctive.

What makes this even more interesting is that serious cricket people are already talking about him:

• Jos Buttler (England captain) had some really good things to say about him after the U19 World Cup. When someone like Buttler—who has played with and against the best T20 hitters in the world—takes notice, that’s not random hype.

• Ian Bishop (West Indies legend and commentator) also spoke highly about his bat speed and talent. If I remember correctly, he even compared his bat speed and potential to a legendary West Indian batter (I can’t recall the exact name, but that’s elite company).

So clearly, this is not just Indian fans hyping a youngster—global cricketing voices are noticing something special here.

But here’s the dilemma:

• Is it too early to fast-track him into international T20s?

• Or is this exactly the kind of talent India should expose early, the way they did with Rohit (in limited overs), Virat, and more recently, Jaiswal and Gill?

On one hand, early exposure can accelerate learning, confidence, and adaptation to pressure. On the other hand, premature hype and international pressure can derail even the most gifted talents.

Personally, I feel he should dominate domestic T20s and IPL consistently for at least 1–2 seasons before getting a serious look. Let him face quality international bowlers in IPL first, let teams start planning for him, and then see how he adapts. If he still stands out, then the India call-up becomes a natural progression rather than a gamble.

What do you guys think?

• Should India fast-track generational T20 talents early?

• Or should we be more conservative and protect young players from hype and pressure?

• And realistically, what timeline do you see for Vaibhav’s India debut—1 year, 3 years, or 5 years?

As soon as he is eligible. This is one format failure tolerance is fairly high. Let him fail and learn. He is gifted.

He will make his debut after IPL and will be a part of next T20 worldcup, but this is going to be a headache, unless SKY retires from T20, i dont see any place in the XI for any other player, if Vaibhav has a freak IPL and Rinku does poorly, he will probably be ahead in the pecking order and might replace rinku, with Vaibhav slotted at number 3, and rest of the batting drops down a number below.

He should be in the team in the next T20I series after the WT20 along with Parag, Vipraj Nigam, Jaiswal, a couple of new pace options, and a new wk (Urvil Patel or some other hard hitting option). Need to start building bench strength and looking to the future.

Sometimes letting them toil in domestic more than rquired can prove to be detrimental. He can be nurtured way better when he is directly under natioanl set up than some Bihar state set up.

Posted this during emerging asa cup too. He needs to be in Ind pipeline asap and should get a better ranji side.

 

Suggested that he should have been in Ind t20i wc side too, but think he is not eligible rt. now. As soon as he is cleared to play at intnl level he should be drafted to T20i side.

He is a kind of player who can regress if he plays domestic cricket. The issue being he has power game think only next to dube in Ind. 

 

As he will score lot of soft runs vs weaker domestic sides and wont improve much, he already score a double ton when every1 complaint about the domestic standards.

He need better challenge than domestic cricket to improve , get him to t20i set-up asap, get him to the Ind A side in test and try him in Odis give him a soft debut like play him 11 if everything is alright send him up the order to try check how he play and handle the intnl bowlers.  If condition is not that suited keep him for backend of the innings.

Let him know that hard work , persistence and doggedness, that characterised every achiever is more important than talent. If talent was enough Vinod kambli would have been on the same plane as Sachin.

2-3 top FC performers from last 2 seasons would have meant we could have won 2-0 vs SA instead of getting blanked with same scoreline
