Eng needed 69 off 30. They scored just 39 off 24 balls despite the belligerent batting. Once they needed 30 off 6,it was all over.

2013 CT final is so underrated

 

Everything was against us that day, toss, conditions....the way we defended 120 in 20 overs against an English side who had been hammering us in all formats since 2011, felt really good. They had a big psychological edge against us around that time, and very deep batting lineup. Cook, Trott, Bell, Root, Buttler, Morgan, Bopara, Bresnan, Broad, all the way to 9 and 120 was a nothing total. 

 

Nobody believed we could pull it off, but then we saw Dhoniconda magic. Ishant's game-changing double wicket over, his reintroduction was a ballsy gamble by Dhoni. Ashwin 2/6 in his first 3 overs and being given the last over. We fought so hard that day, very satisfying win. Kohli with his white jacket doing Gangnam style dance and pushups, that was a rare moment of happiness in the middle of some tough years for Indian cricket.

Many here may not remember. But Poms were unbearable in that phase. Their commentators/experts would keep talking smack about our team even in non-India matches, BCCI, IPL...Shastri/Sunny had a few tiffs with Sky commentators that time. They would host these Lord Taverners Luncheons, Cowdrey Lectures where they would invite non-Indian legends and whole event would be dedicated only to talk **** about our players, evil India/BCCI etc. Even gentlemen like Sachin, Kumble, Dada would be targetted, all sorts of unfounded allegations about our guys. 

 

I have never seen a witch hunt like that. I remember an ODI match in 2012 where we were beating Eng and suddenly English commentators (and Tony Greig who became blatantly anti-India in his later years) started talking about our lack of medals in Olympics, and making fun of our commentator...they just needed something to latch on to to demean India. The vitriol was too much, and we were not good at giving it back, our fans' SM behaviour was also very apologetic. 

 

Of course now their criticism is toned down or veiled, thet still hate us. But are more subtle about it.

 

2011-15 was a depressing time to be an Indian fan. Our onfield results were bad, we had become a butt of jokes, this CT win was like oxygen back then. Better that it came against those Poms, in their backyard.

I would rate 2011 semis v Pak. They were a good team that time and we scored too few. Munaf was underrated hero in that WC

Tbh I don't remember most of our MOTMs. Don't know who was MOTM in last year's CT F. Or the T20 WC SF/F. Most of the past ICC wins as well. 

 

MOTS/MOTT I may have a better idea/guess. 

 

I don't give much importance to all that, just remember those who played well that day. Team winning is the only thing that matters. 

 

I knew Jadeja stitched an important partnership with Kohli that day. But I remember moments more, like Ashwin's sharp slip catch to dismiss Cook off Umesh's bowling (because it was unexpected), Morgan and Bopara losing their wickets to Ishant in one over, Dhoni's sharp stumping of Bell, Root's dismissal.

Also our dislike of Jaddu the white ball player makes us forget the few good things he did. He may have screwed us in a dozen tournaments but there is 2013 CT, 2019 SF, evn in 2023 WC he generally outbowled Kuldeep.

That group match against SA in 2007 wt20 was also memorable and good defence. They were chasing 150 odd and India restricted them for 116 and qualified for SF and also knocked out home team SA which needed to cross 125 for SF spot. RP's banana swings and DK's catch of Smith

India 's defence of 288 in 1996 was also very good after onslaught of Anwar and Sohail. Pakistan was 113/1 in 14.5 overs when Sohail did ishara to Prasad and Broke his concentration. If he stayed on pitch then 175 in 34 overs could had been easy

2002 semi also underrated and considering final was washed out twice, it was what won us the trophy.

 

At end of 40 overs, SA had 7 wickets to get 63 runs. They got 53.

 

Sehwag did the damage.

 

1983 final also great defense obviously.

Nothing can beat the 2024 Final.

 

It was gone for all the money. I had switched off my TV and went back to my room to watch Netflix and distract myself but suddenly started hearing people screaming outside. So I turned the TV on and couldn't believe my eyes. 30 off 30 somehow because 16 off 6. 

 

Bumrah , Arsh and Pandya were something else that day.

Best defence of all time and will still remain forever is India defending 183 in 60 Overs against West Indies in 1983 final. They needed 134 in 50 odd overs with 9 wickets in hand with batting line up of Desmond Haynes Viv Richards Clive Lloyd Jeff Dujon against out bowling line up of Kapil Dev, Madan Lal , Roger Binny, Sandhu, Amarnath..this was like zimbabwe beating the 2007 prime aus team in a world cup final by scoring 150 in 50 overs..
