Will Rohit's 2027 World Cup future be decided after IPL 2026? Is Shubman really the best bet as captain ?

Based on GG's recent statements to the media, planning for the 2027 WC will take place after IPL 2026.

Rohit has gone out of his way fitness wise and really wants to be part of the 2027 WC squad.

Will GG want a 38 ( Kohli ) and 39 ( Rohit )  year olds  in the top order for the 2027 CWC ?

Is there a standout replacement for Rohit, if he is dropped from the plans of the selection committee / GG ?

I have zero confidence in a team led by Shubman Gill. I really don't know why he is seen as captaincy material.

On the surface, he just seems to lack the guile, cleverness and tactical ability. Nor does he have a personality to give confidence to the team.

I would anyday prefer someone like Hardik  or Bumrah from the available options.

No, Ipl will not be the place where rohit's wc place will be decided. It can not be that every game he plays is like a audition.

The idea should be both Rohit and Kolhi are locked for this wc, and if they are locked they will not be dropped from the playing 11 in any condition.

And from here the ideal choice for captain will be either Kolhi or rohit, this now gives bit of space where they can have LH batter in the side i.e. jaiswal and gill gets dropped frm the 15. And now in place of verma you can look for other options

Here are the constraints that this Ind teams have and with this there is no space. Have posted a possible 15 with some wildcard selections and tactical moves because of the limitations

  • Top 5 locked :::: Gill, Rohit, Kolhi, KL, Iyer

  • Backup opener + keeper :: Ishan Kishan/Rutu

  • 5 front-line seamers :: Bhumrah, Siraj, Arshadeep, RamaKrishna Gosh, Ashok/Mayank

  • 1–2 spinners :: Kuldeep, Axar

  • Hardik Pandya included

  • Overs coverage guaranteed

Added verma to 15 for a middle order LH batter, wildcards : Gosh, Ashok/Mayank

Rohit never had blockbuster IPL even when he was at his peak in international. So can't rely on that. He is going to play WC just 1.5 years remaining for WC.

He should retire gracefully and make way for Jaiswal. Jaiswal needs enough practice.

I have a feeling Kohli and Rohit will not play world cup 2027. Gambhir was always against Kohli and his position has just solidified more.

There is no remote back-up for kolhi , yes jaiswal can replace and opener but there is no other #3.

Gambhir is not really against them, he is against them not performing and not being available for each and every game, plus not being ready to play domestics.

If they are ready to play every Odi till next odi wc and as there are v.few Odis and as Rohit and kolhi have retired from tests and T20is so the only place they can be match fit and tested is domestics, gambhir would be ok.

Whatever happens, it must be merit based and not because of GG's whims and fancies. If Kohli continues his rich vein of form, he should not be unceremoniously dumped.

Also a person like GG, once you give that kind of unlimited power, he can do more damage to the team in the long run, by allowing his likes/dislikes and prejudice to make his team....there should always be strong checks and balances. Decisions must be based on a consensus. If not for RP and Ojha, Gill would have been opener for us in this WC, imagine his glorious 30(25) contributions when Abhi was struggling, we wouldn't have even made SF.

I wish Gill just focusses on test captaincy for next couple of cycles. He did a really good job in England. But again that all format nonsense started by picking him in T20 team, he lost his test game and also got injured at a bad time in RSA series, that was possibly because of him coming back to Ind from the Aus T20I series, just couple of days before start of test. We treated test cricket like a joke and suffered.

There is a clear WTC system before us, plan accordingly. Hire a new specialized coach, and make Gill work with a new staff to ensure we regain our mojo in that format.

Small correction. Rohit will be 40.5 when the WC starts. Kohli will turn 39 during that tournament.

Jaiswal can replace Rohit, but he needs more game time starting now. Hardly 25 ODIs before the event and he has only played 5 ODIs in his career.

No replacement for Kohli, and there never will be.

Like you, I don't have confidence in Gill's captaincy. Hardik, no way. Perhaps Bumrah? But BCCI is always reluctant when it comes to bowling captains.

Rohit (and  Kohli) is a man with connections and fans in high places. If he has been assured of a place in the squad, he will likely be on the plane to SA.

It does not matter who leads as GG appears to operate the captain with a remote control.

Just play form players.

Say 3 to 4 months before wc look at the form of players and make the call.

Its too early.

The problem with that approach is the low number of ODIs in total that we play which results in lack of game time.

We cannot judge them in other leagues etc like we can judge t20 players in IPL.

So 3-4 months before the cup if we find Rohit and kohli habe lost form, will there be enough time to give Jaiswal or other players enough matches and test them?

I don't care how great they were in the last, but carrying such old players nearing 40 will cost us the cup.

Thats upto the bcci. Ideally should be arranging around 15 odis + wc warm ups prior to the main event in a 3 to 4 month cycle.

Sai Sudarshan. Was our MVP when we last won ODI series in SA on tough wkts. Back youngsters as they've always performed, be it 2020-21 BGT series in Aus, current WT20 , 2007 WT20 or whenever we had to throw youngsters in the deep. It's our seniors who haven't lived up to their hype and reputation.

That SA vs Ind Odi series was 2 experimental sides playing each other it was a slow an low scoring series.

And when Ind got a ~300 target they were bowled out  under 225 , think Sai scored less than 15 runs

And if that series was the bench mark then Avesh should be in next wc playing 11 he was the 2nd highest wkt taker over all with 6 wkts.

And all Sai scored was 120-130 runs in 3 match series.

In odi wc heavy lifting has to be done by exp. players and younger players need to chip in with impt contributions.

Its a tournament where you need players who have exp. to taking truck loads of wkts and batter who can hit tons after tons.

Here is the list of most runs and wkts in last 6 Odi world cups , its not where rookies plays major role. you need ppl who been there and done that.

The reason why there is no point in dropping rohit and kolhi is because Ind didnt give any1 else much chances , there was no batter who was developed keeping in mind of the Odi wc

World Cup Most Runs Runs Most Wickets Wickets
2023 Virat Kohli 765 Mohammed Shami 24
2019 Rohit Sharma 648 Mitchell Starc 27
2015 Martin Guptill 547 Mitchell Starc 22
2011 Tillakaratne Dilshan 500 Zaheer Khan 21
2007 Matthew Hayden 659 Glenn McGrath 26
2003 Sachin Tendulkar 673 Chaminda Vaas 23

Too early to say anything. They'll take it one tournament at a time.

Odi wc is less than 2 yrs away, Rohit and kolhi can not retire now there will be huge backslash on them and bcci.

TM can not ask them to retire and let others play because there is no time left , there will be huge backslash on TM and bcci if Ind does not win it eventually.
