Daft as it sounds, is Tendulkar underrated?

Not sure this warrants a new thread but let's give it a go. It seems daft to say so, but is Sachin Tendulkar in fact underrated, particularly outside India? I'm not sure how you would even begin to ascertain whether a batsman was appropriately rated but having read thousands upon thousands of blogs on him and his contemporaries I feel he is underrated. Sachinism is a bit like Hinduism. A billion people are devotees and yet the rest of the world hasn't a bloody clue what it actually means.

Well that's debatable. Hinduism is about the only religion that IS revered, at least by those that know what they are talking about. Just ask Einstein and Schrodinger.

No he is not. His rabid fanbase has managed to get a lot of people annoyed over the years but as a batsman almost everyone rates him as an all time best which he is.

I'm going off topic, not that there was really one to begin with, but is his fan base any more rabid or farcical than that of Jesus, or Mohammed, or Buddha? I think the reverse could easily be argued.

Definitely not. He is certainly overrated. Perhaps the best of his generation (i think this is arguable) but not by the distance many suggest.

Sachin certainly a genius, the most important thing for me is his humility and who he is, longitivity, he could bowl seam, very talented leggie, could have performed better in tests , but an all time great, once in a generation player.

Tendulkar's real worth is how neutral fans rate him, not how most Indians (over)rate him.

Guys like him , Dravid, Laxman set the values of being grounded despite being successful. Guys like Kambli, Sreesanth did the opposite with freestyle life.

Given that he is frequently talked about as the greatest batsman of the modern times, his test average does not stand out above others. So even if he is, it is by a sliver. Yes technically he is the best I have seen and is a joy to watch, but there is no doubt that a sub 54 average is pedestrian for a batsman who is supposedly the greatest batsman of modern times, like Bradman was for the older times. He definitely stood out among his contemporaries.
