Dhoni and His Two Spinner Strategy

Gavaskar has no shame either

MS Dhoni struggling but shouldn't be singled out yet: Sunil Gavaskar

Not quite impressed with Mahendra Singh Dhoni's batting form in the ongoing ODI series against Australia, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar on Friday said the stumper is "struggling but shouldn't be singled out" for criticism just yet.
India lost the second successive ODI against Australia despite posting a 300-plus score target for the hosts. "He used to be the finisher, India's pride and world's envy but he is struggling a bit now. It is tough when you are not playing regularly, it can affect your performance. But my advice would be to just let him be because he has won India so many matches," Gavaskar told 'NDTV'.

"I don't think we can single him out. I think with the contribution in the last 10 overs from everybody, maybe, India could have had 20-30 runs more but I doubt even then Australia would have won because they won today with an over to go. So I think it has to be a team effort. Bowling and fielding has to be better. At the moment batting is clicking but down the order there is not much contribution," he pointed out.
Gavaskar felt India have failed to find that one "magical" person who can take the team through and will have to bowl with lot more discipline to put brakes on a rampaging Australia in the five-match series.

Flawed thinking. And moreover, Dhoni has already rested on past laurels for a long, long time. He should have quit at the end of last year's world cup itself. What is he trying to do still playing ODIs? Drag his jaded, has been self into the next world cup and ruin the team even furthter?

This is heights...

I figured out after 1st ODI that chances of winning is much higher if we chase in Ozzie conditions with players that they got. All their batters are much better at chasing... Bailey, Smith, Maxwell, Faulkner. But  our captain is just realizing that now.

Plus, what's up with saying ''it is important to see''... he sounds like he is preaching kids about his master successful strategy.. he has been awful in admitting and rectifying mistakes .. but master in trying to prove himself right..

I doubt we can chase down what they throw at us either. 350 is their 300, they are capable of consistently putting up 335-350 on the board and once Rohit and Kohli fall, the chase is all over.

One win against Pakistan, entry to SF of t20 wc and everyone will forget how pathetic this team has been in last 2 years...Only series win was against depleted England side(Under captaincy of Dhoni)since last 2 years....

5-0 this time and in t20s we wont even try to win, this###dhoni will try to get his combinations right before t20 wc...Literally done with this dull, boring cricket by india.

Lol! Dhoni criticizing a player picked in the squad even before giving him a chance. How much more pathetic can it get?

Are we so starved of resources that we have to stick to this monotonous, unimaginative, rigid guy? Surely, we can try R Sharma as ODI captain for a series or two. What's the harm in trying out a new captain? So we may lose a series or two......... As things stand, we' re going to lose anyway.

Seriously, selectors have lost their marbles to continue with this guy.

Going by that cricinfo article, I think it'll be a batting order change.. Rahane and Sharma opening with Kohli and Dhawan following.

OZ are a much better side in these conditions. If they had batted first, they probably could have scored 350+

Not expecting much from Ind apart from a few brilliant individual performances. The minimum that I expect is that the team goes in with the right strategy including getting the playing 11 right

Dhoni's captaincy has been exposed more after Kohli's take-over in tests, you can see a stark difference in how they handle their bowlers on and off the field. While Kohli treats them like match winners and kings, MSD keeps bringing their reputation down by saying "we need 350 to win". What sort of message that sends to opposition?

On flat pitches where you don't get assistance you build pressure by keeping tight fields, he did well in initial overs and almost created 2-3 chances which went down but as soon as Finch and Marsh broke free, he went back being defensive. Allowing 5-6 easy singles every over. Thanks to our bowlers who, wides and an odd bad ball for 4 kept Aus above the rate throughout.

India need a captain who is looking for wickets. The fact that India need to pick wickets instead of looking to score 350 isnt going into MSD's thick skull. He is too adamant and not ready for change and hearing him in PC is plain awful now. It is a shame because when he came early on he was all about adapting to new things and he wasn't afraid of dropping players or trying out different combinations.

Berating Rishi Dhawan (even if he thinks he is not upto the mark) in PC constantly is not what a captain should be allowed to do. I am just appalled that no "expert" has commented on MSD slating his players in PC and getting away with it.

He has a point

Indian fast bowlers and medium pacers suck

Rishi Dhawan is another 120 KPH trundle who will get smashed all over the place. Why even play him? I have no idea how he was selected.

His batting is below par for a #6 or #7 at international level. The only guy to may be tru out is Pandya

Dhoni isn't supposed to be the judge of a talent. That is why selectors are there. He is a captain, he is supposed to pick the best possible combination for the conditions.

If selectors think Rishi is the best A/R atm in country, least MS could do is give him a shot. I think he needs to be told that his job is to pick the best XI not judge who is good enough to play for India or not. Lets leave that to selectors.

Dhoni has been grooming Jadeja for years  now.. and he still not consistent hitting batter that we hoped for. And Shikhar Dhawan is another horse that he is backing wrongly. Dhawan is only good in India.. he has been beyond pathetic for more than a year. How many times one can see an opener getting caught behind.

Unbelievable that BCCI/Dhoni can't see all this...

'Jadeja gives cushion of batting' when was the last time this happened in a cricket match.

Dhobi got things mixed up... Jaddu, his long time lover, acts as cushion for him when he humps him in his hotel room... By mistake Dhobi blurted that out in the PC...

He was asked why Dhawan did not play and he justified his playing XI and the reasons why it is tough to play Rishi Dhawan in the XI

Dhoni picked what he feels in the best XI. Yes selectors can pick Dhawan all they want but ultimately Dhoni picks the XI.

What he "feels" doesn't cut it. These pitches require 4-1 combination with 4th seamer who can bat a bit. If selectors feel Rishi is the one, MS has to give him a shot.

^ if he's made up his mind about any player, forcing him to select the player in the playing Eleven will also not work. He's a wicket keeper, might drop catches off RD deliberately or just give him tiny spell to unsettle him... The best scenario is to let him do his process, get whitewashed and collect more ignominy before he fades out... Stinking fart, will go very slowly...

Sorry to be the contrarian here, but I don't think its a captaincy issue - its a personnel issue.  Its not dhoni's fault if we leak singles and doubles in the field like a sieve, or miss runouts.   And its not his fault if Kohli and Rahane can't hit more boundaries in the last 10-15 overs.  And I happen to agree with his selection logic - Rishi Dhawan is at best, the #4 seamer in the squad.  And dropping Ashwin for military medium-pace is not exactly a great choice either.

But, carry on the Dhoni-bashing, since all of the blame for losses, and high taxes, and slow internet, is due to him.
