Ganguly questions Dhoni's future as Indian captain

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has raised questions over MS Dhoni’s future as captain of Indian cricket team in the limited overs format. In a recent interview to India Today, Ganguly suggested that Dhoni might not have much time left as India’s captain and asked the selectors to think about the future. 

 

Dhoni has been under pressure to retire for a some time now and as Rising Pune Supergiants continue to struggle in the IPL, the voices have got louder. People are suggesting that his days are over and Ganguly’s statement is certainly going to lend a lot of weight against Dhoni.

“My point is that selectors need to think three years down the line or four years down the line, when the World Cup is going to happen: Do they see MS Dhoni as captain of India? Does he have the ability to see India into that World Cup in 2019? He has already given up Test cricket,” Ganguly was quoted as saying by a News 18 report.

 

“Dhoni has been captain for nine years, which is a long period. Does he have it in him to go for another four years? Do the selectors think he has got in him to go another four years and be captain of a country for 13 years and take them to the 2019 World Cup? I am not so sure. That’s the decision the selectors will have to take,” he added.

He just won us the Asia cup, whitewashed Aust in Aust (T20s), took us to semi finals in T20 WC. But but...one IPL poor performance....and all hell broke loose.

Why do people act like there is nothing more to cricket than WC?

The WC was last year and already people are talking about the next like nothing else matters.

You can have  good team and most of them  could go out of form in 3 years.The aim should be to have a good team and good reserve at all times and not just  prepare for WC all the time.

What has he done in odis apart from sf in 2015 wc in last 3 years...We have been losing every series since the Australia series in 2013 in India..These t20s win are masking his failures...He has been pathetic.

On the contrary I think 2016 been a pretty decent year for MS. Yes last year he was on horrible form but he seemed to be getting back his touch. Most of the wins in Asia Cup and WT20, MSD was the helping hand of Kohli. Yes Kohli's batting won us the matches but MS complemented him beatifully whether it be running between wickets or giving ample strike to Virat. And when big shots required he did that too, like Asia cup final.

I agree with Radhika not sure why so much focus on 2019 WC from now? We have champions trophy next year, lets see how the team performs and take it on from there.

As far as I know Ganguly has praised Dhoni many times than criticizing...Even this time he is not criticizing..He is just trying to say that 3 years too much and he doesnt see Dhoni captaining India..Even yesterday I watched him praising Dhoni on News...

Doesn't matter him or any other in future don't expect to win a Test series unless you got Quality bowlers like we had in 2006/07 where we beat England at home.. If you got 5G hacks its a feast for warner and co..

Had he not captained,someone other would have captained those players(I dont want to call them5g hacks)..Its not like only he can handle the team and Indian players and management would be on roads if not Dhoni..Indian bowling was not that great even in past..

 

You could only mention that England series because we havent done a jack in Odis in last three years under Dhoni's captaincy..And even that was a depleted England side who lost to Srilanka after that which was whitewashed by India...Hell we even couldnt beat that England side in triseries before wc.

Ganguly has posed a right ques that selectors need to ask dhoni that does he feel he can captain till 2019 if not better tell now so enough time is given to next captain as it wud be unfair to give any captain just one year before Wc. 

But selectors do need to ask him if he feel excited, does he have a vision and how he is looking to maintain his own form as he doesnt play test now n next odi series wud be 5-6 mnths away and there wud be no Domestic Odi cricket also at that time.

The bigger question is whether Dhoni is enjoying his game or not ? His 8(22) was a far cry from the fiery knocks he played against Pakistan and Sri Lanka in mid 2000's, he's clearly not enjoying his game, should retire since he has already achieved a lot for the game and the team.

A strange situation has unfolded in the last few years.

 

Dhoni is still a good ODI batsman ( although he should bat at no. 4 nowadays )  but has lost 7 out of the 9 ODI series as captain in the last 2.5 years.  His captaincy is looking stale.

 

He is a terrible T20 batsman now but has decent captaincy record  in T20Is in the recent past.

 

We don't have any wicket-keeper batsman who is a ready replacement for Dhoni.

 

Dhoni could have continued as a T20 captain but he should not be in the team as a batsman. 

 

He should immediately quit ODI captaincy and continue as a batsman / keeper batting at no. 4, where he can still be an asset.

Completely agree with both he is a terrfic Odi batsman, and shud continue as playing as batsman keeper. None better than him. 

The burden of captaincy is taking a toll in his batting now.

HE is the last guy i wanna see struggling. 

He is still one of the best odi batsman and leaving captaincy wud do wonders to his own game like it did to ganguly. HE ll be a lot more relaxed and kohli wud assign him a diff role for sure and make sure he bats up the order rather wasting himself down the order.

It wud be worst if he looses his form n place after 1-2 series coz then the new captains gets only 2 yrs b4 next Wc which is not enough time

As the Dhoni fans rightly point out, no captain can win you series and WCs with the crap bowling attack we have. It's unfair to make Dhoni to do this dirty job any longer. He has aged about 20 years in his 9 year captaincy. It's high time someone younger like Virat Kohli to take up this thankless job and allow Dhoni to focus on his WK and batting and not worrying about the ridiculous excuses and weird analogies to come up with.

True, n however gud or bad bowling attack that is he has tried all things he cud but when things r not working u need to change something. Virat or new captain fresh ideas wud help or even may fail but dhoni has tried all his ideas and they dnt seem to be working. Its best for him that he concentrates on his batting n play his natural game n win matches like he use to.

you will never have a readymade like for like replacement. We have seen SRT, RD, VVS, Sehwag retired. There is no replacement for them too. Players make their own place. The way Rishabh Pant has done, he is a serious candidate for that slot. Samson is another one.
